Douglas County, known for its affluent suburban communities, has taken a legal step this week to resolve the state’s property tax mess by suing the state board responsible for evaluating property assessments.
The county claims that officials overstepped their authority and wrongly prevented the county from providing much-needed tax relief to thousands of homeowners.
The decision by the board last month and the subsequent appeal to a judge come at a time when Colorado is embroiled in a heated debate over how to address the soaring property tax bills that have burdened residents this year.
In its lawsuit filed against the state Board of Equalization, Douglas County accuses the board of making an “arbitrary and capricious” decision by unanimously denying the county’s proposed $4 billion reduction in residential home values. The county’s intention was to lower tax bills for homeowners by adjusting the mill levies, or tax rates, of various taxing entities.
The lawsuit argues that the state board unfairly targeted Douglas County for denial while approving similar requests for larger valuation reductions from other counties. Additionally, the county highlights that its assessment adjustment had already received approval from state tax officials and a third-party auditor, only to be rejected by the equalization board.
This legal action by Douglas County sheds light on the larger issue of escalating property tax bills affecting Colorado residents. It is a matter that demands urgent attention and effective solutions from state officials. However, it seems that Democrats, who hold significant power in Colorado, have been reluctant to address the mess they have created by their lack of action.
