PUEBLO — The high stakes of potentially losing the slimmest of margins in the U.S. House of Representatives could be in play if the Colorado Republican Party does not unify, Greg Lopez told delegates today as he addressed the party’s assembly here.
“It’s vital we stand together and make sure we win the election,” Lopez said.
Various resignations in the House have trimmed the Republican margin to one vote and could put Republican Speakership in jeopardy.
He will appear as the Republican nominee in June on the special election ballot for the 4th District. Some have called it a placeholder election to serve six months in Congress, finishing ex-U.S. Rep. Ken Buck’s unexpired term. Lopez will be opposed in the special election by a Democrat and Libertarian candidate, he said.
He positions himself as a candidate who can draw Hispanic voters to cast Republican votes, and also connect with unaffiliated voters, the largest block of registered Colorado voters.
“These issues we face are impacting every American,” Lopez said. “I’m a strong supporter of closing the border. I’m a stronhg supporter of the 2nd Amendment. I’m a strong supporter of life. It is a baby in the womb and we must protect it.”
He predicted victory in June with unity behind his candidacy.
“When we band as brothers and sisters and we have a united voice, we will make Colorado red again,” Lopez said.
He will not seek election in the primary election for a term to begin in 2025. Yesterday, delegates here placed Lauren Boebert on that ballot, joining Deborah Flora who has successfully petitioned on the ballot. A number of other candidates could potentially petition onto the ballot.
