Brita Horn, a well-known leader in Colorado politics, has announced her candidacy for the chair position of the Colorado Republican Party.
The move comes as part of a broader effort to steer the party in a new direction, following a period of controversy and internal conflict under the current leadership, according to her announcement.
Horn’s journey into public service began with a defining moment on Sept. 11, 2001, which ignited her passion for volunteerism and community leadership. Rooted deeply in her Christian values, Horn has dedicated her life to serving others. She played a pivotal role in establishing the Rock Creek Volunteer Fire Department in McCoy, Colo., where she serves as the fire chief. Her leadership ensures not only fire protection, but also emergency services and vigilant care for the community and travelers, the announcement continues.
In the political arena, Horn is the current Colorado chair of Maggie’s List, an organization focused on electing conservative women to Congress. She has been involved with the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) for 12 years and manages over 200 volunteers for their annual event in Washington, D.C. Additionally, she has supported Lance Wallnau Ministries and The Courage Tour in similar volunteer coordination roles and worked for the RNC Trump Victory Team 2020 in New Mexico as a field director. She was also a delegate at the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland and on the Trump slate for the 2nd District at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
Horn’s dedication to constituents is exemplified, she says, through her role as Routt County treasurer and public trustee, where she championed fair treatment for residents and held corporations accountable for their tax obligations. Her influence extends beyond Colorado, with recognition in numerous publications and contributions to books like “Lilies of Our Valley” and “Women in the Fire Service”, the announcement reads.
Horn’s path to leadership included working as a full-time Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) while pursuing a fire science degree at Colorado Mountain College. She has served in various roles in Routt and Eagle Counties, including with Eagle County Paramedic Services and several fire protection districts. Her expertise extends to the Rocky Mountain Type II Incident Management Team (IMT) and the Southwest IMT, where she excelled as a Status Check-In Coordinator and Safety Officer.
Horn has been the treasurer for the Eagle County Fire Chiefs’ Association and an advocate for volunteer firefighters in Colorado. She played a significant role in creating a 36-hour Pre-Firefighter Task Book, essential for training volunteer fire departments across the state. She continues to serve volunteer firefighters as a board director for the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Volunteer and Combination Officers Section (VCOS) and has been appointed to the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code Board.
Recently, Horn achieved another milestone as a best-selling author with her book, “Drinking from a Fire Hose: 5 Essential Tools to Not Get Soaked,” emphasizing faith, resilience, and community spirit.
Horn’s focus will be a robust fundraising strategy, having received pledges in the tens of thousands, if and when she is elected as the next chair, she says. Parallel with those efforts, Horn’s team will work with the candidates to make sure they receive the data, resources, and volunteers to get them over the finish line. Horn will also follow the RNC lead to get out the vote and protect the ballot in Colorado., she says.
Horn’s bid for chair of the Colorado GOP comes at a critical time for the party. Current Chairman Dave Williams faces a vote this weekend to remove him from the position, following a series of controversies. Williams has been under pressure to resign since joining a contested primary and for his controversial comments during Pride Month.
The central committee will meet to consider the motion to oust Williams and potentially elect new officers, including Horn.
Other rumored and announced candidates for the chair position include Eli Bremer, Steve Durham, Richard Holtorf, Jay Misary and Steve Peck.
