In a pivotal 4-3 vote on Tuesday night, the Douglas County School District board approved the release of the John Adams Academy charter school to apply for authorization through the Colorado Charter School Institute (CSI). This decision, made possible by conservative members of the board, marks a significant milestone for school choice advocates in Douglas County and underscores the importance of empowering parents with diverse educational options.
The debate surrounding this decision was passionate and highlighted a fundamental divide: should charter schools be confined to district oversight, or should they have the flexibility to pursue authorization through alternative pathways like CSI? For supporters of school choice, this vote represents a win for parents, students, and the growing community of Sterling Ranch.
Championing Parental Choice
Sterling Ranch is a community poised to house 20,000 residents at full buildout. With such growth comes a pressing need for innovative educational options. The John Adams Academy, rooted in the principles of classical education, offers a curriculum designed to foster critical thinking, character development, and a lifelong love of learning.
“I strongly believe that offering multiple pathways to charter authorization is essential to advancing the school choice movement. Parents across our communities are calling for more options, recognizing that every child learns differently. When the organizers of this proposed classical charter school chose to apply through the Colorado Charter School Institute, I was thrilled to see the DCSD Board of Education vote to support their vision. This is the true spirit of parental choice in action. I’m excited to welcome the John Adams Academy model to Douglas County and Colorado!” said Kim Gilmartin, one of the key organizers behind this effort.
Through her Liberty Schools Initiative, a Colorado nonprofit, Mrs. Gilmartin empowers parent and community groups to navigate the complex process of applying for authorization to establish classical charter schools.
Setting a Precedent for Excellence
Critics of the decision have argued that the release bypassed established district processes and posed risks to local control. However, this perspective overlooks the critical benefits of charter schools pursuing CSI authorization. Unlike district-authorized charters, CSI schools operate with greater autonomy, which allows them to innovate and cater to specific community needs.
For families like Tori’s, a hopeful Sterling Ranch resident who spoke passionately during public comment, the presence of John Adams Academy isn’t just about education—it’s about building a community where families can thrive. “Sterling Ranch has the capacity for multiple schools,” Tori said. “This is the perfect moment to set a precedent for choice and excellence in education.”
A Necessary Step Forward
Opposition voices have characterized the decision as politically motivated or lacking transparency, pointing to concerns over the process of adding the vote to the agenda. While procedural improvements can always be made, the essence of this decision should not be overshadowed: parents deserve choices, and communities like Sterling Ranch deserve educational models that reflect their values and aspirations.
Douglas County has long been a battleground for educational reform, with a history of tension between traditional district advocates and charter school supporters. By approving this release, the Board has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a diverse and competitive educational landscape. This decision empowers families, enhances community growth, and reinforces the principle that education should not be one-size-fits-all.
The release of John Adams Academy to CSI is more than a procedural outcome—it’s a victory for parents, students, and the broader school choice movement. As Douglas County continues to grow and evolve, decisions like these will set the tone for a future where educational opportunities are as dynamic and diverse as the communities they serve.
