Devotional: Embracing new life through regeneration

By Drake Hunter | Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice

The Helmet of Salvation, an essential part of the spiritual armor described in Ephesians 6:10-18, is not merely an image to visualize. It symbolizes the protection and assurance we gain when we respond to God’s call for a new life—or a rebirth of reality—a new existence where we shed the old self and embrace a new reality that transforms our religious experiences into a deeper and more profound humanity in every aspect of life. The question is: will you answer the call?

Ring! Ring! Ring! Ah, the sweet sound of an incoming call. Well, at least it used to be. Nowadays, when my wife calls, I hear “Oh Sherrie”  by Journey (yes, I’m that guy). But no matter the ringtone, every call presents a choice—answer it or let it go to voicemail.

The funny thing is that God calls us just like we receive a phone call. His call rings out loud and clear, but the question is: do we pick up or ignore it? Most people instinctively know that ignoring it leads to a dial tone of silence, separation, and stillness. But when we answer—oh, when we answer!—we discover a presence that is real, good, and dynamically life-changing.

Now, here’s where things get tricky. The moment we’re born into this world, we’re thrown into a reality governed by time, space, and material things. And let’s be honest—mistakes happen—lots of them. Before we know it, we’re stumbling around in spiritual blindness, unable to see past our limitations, doubts, and that pile of bad decisions collecting dust in the corner.

But here’s the comforting news: God doesn’t leave us fumbling in the dark. He intervenes and makes it clear that there’s another way. Answering His call means doing an about-face—turning away from the old ways, the old mindset, and the old lies that told us we could do life on our own. It means choosing a new reality—one built on truth, grace, and, well, actual hope with God and others.

This divine turnaround is what theologians call Regeneration—the moment when God hits the ultimate “refresh” button on your soul when you answer the call. It’s where the lost get found, the blind find sight, and the weary find rest. It’s not a self-improvement plan—it’s a total heart transplant. We see this promise in both the Old and New Testaments:

“I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.” – Ezekiel 11:19-20

“Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things…you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.’” – Matthew 19:28

So here’s the deal: God is calling. Right now. This is not a spam call or robocall—just an urgent invitation to a real, abundant life that brings about fulfillment, true happiness, and success overall.

The ringtone is blaring. Will you answer, listen, and pay attention? For your sake and everyone involved, I hope so! So, Suit up! Put on the Helmet of Salvation and step into the reality of regeneration—where life isn’t just slightly better, but brand new
