Denver Smash-and-Grabs Surge as Soft-on-Crime Policies Backfire

DENVER (KDVR) — A Denver liquor store in the Sunnyside community has become the latest target of a bold smash-and-grab.

The burglary happened in the early morning hours in the 2700 block of West 38th Street and it was all captured on surveillance video. Police are now hoping to catch the suspects, who appear to be teens, while neighboring businesses are sharing their concerns.

The owner of the latest smash and grab did not want to speak on camera out of fear of retaliation, but nearby business owners told FOX31, they experienced a similar fate.

For Ram, owner of Federal Cut Rate Liquors, running his small business at the intersection of 37th and Federal is his livelihood.

“Been here almost 10 years,” he said.

That’s why it was hard for him to watch as crews worked to repair the damage near 38th and Clay from the latest smash-and-grab at a liquor store less than half a mile from his store.

“This is happening everywhere around 2 to 4 am,” said Ram. “This is the time people are sleeping.”

The owner of the liquor store, the victim of the latest smash and grab, did not want to speak on camera out of fear of retaliation, but shared surveillance from the crime.

Brazen burglars busted out the door of the liquor store using a chain to pull out the door. After putting the truck in reverse twice, the group heads inside, taking high-end bottles of liquor and loading them up into a white truck, taking off in less than five minutes.

The video shows a group of what appeared to be six masked teens. The owner tells FOX31 they are now out of more than $12,000 between the broken door, theft and clean up.

“Same thing happened to me,” said Ram.

The crime happened to Ram two months ago, and it’s hard for him to watch the same scenario play out nearby.

“Same thing. Reverse the vehicle and broke in,” Ram said. “They don’t have plates. They probably stole it from somebody else.”
