“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
~ Ephesians 6:17 ~
As a boy, I loved playing with swords. Sometimes I’d pick up a stick and pretend to be Robin Hood, while other times I engaged in lightsaber duels reminiscent of Star Wars. Our battles were always grand—filled with heroic moves, slow-motion falls, and victory speeches nobody requested. My two triplet sisters, Faye and Barbara, along with my little brother, Todd, were my sparring partners. We weren’t a medieval army, but when we started fighting, the backyard often turned into a battlefield in more ways than one. Someone always ended up ‘injured,’ usually me, and the rules often changed mid-fight to give the girls an advantage. My brother and I were so easily won over by girls, still are—just ask our granddaughters.
Back then, the swords were made of wood or plastic, but in my mind, they could defeat dragons, save kingdoms, and rescue the day. Fast forward to adulthood, and I’ve realized God equips His people with a sword far more powerful than anything I imagined as a kid. It’s not forged from steel or glowing plasma—it’s the living, breathing Word of God. The Sword of the Spirit is our weapon for both attack and defense, enabling us to confront lies, cut through confusion, and stand our ground when the enemy strikes.
What do I mean that the Sword of the Spirit is the living, breathing Word of God:
The “Sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17) is the Word of God, and that’s more than just having the word — it’s being formed by it. The sword is effective in the hands of someone who is fully yielded to the Spirit (Jesus’s Teachings – Commands) so that God’s word is not only memorized but internalized and lived.
In other words:
A disciple becomes a “living expression” of the Word — much like Jesus, who is the Word made flesh (John 1:14).
So a person who has submitted their life to Christ — walking daily with Him, letting Scripture shape their thoughts, desires, and responses — becomes someone who can wield that sword effectively. Their words, actions, and decisions begin to cut through lies and reveal truth, correct and heal, defend and build up — not because of their power, but because the Spirit is operating through them.
So yes — the Sword of the Spirit is not just a tool in our hand; it’s also a reality in our person. It’s Christ’s Word coming alive in and through us.
This is the fifth piece of the Armor of God in the way we’re walking through it this year—right after the Shield of Faith and before we get to the Shoes of Readiness and Prayer. And while every other piece we’ve studied so far has been about protection, this one is designed for getting ready for action.
Over the next several weeks, we’ll discover:
- How to use the Sword offensively to advance God’s Kingdom with truth and grace.
- How to wield it defensively to guard against temptation, deception, and doubt.
- How to apply it daily in decisions, relationships, and challenges.
- How it transforms us from the inside out, making us stronger and more Christ-like.
As we get ready to understand and reveal some powerful truths about God’s Spirit and the sword that symbolizes it, let me give you three main principles to start sharpening your sword for this series.
- Know the Sword – You can’t wield what you don’t understand. Spend time in Scripture until its truths are second nature.
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
~ 2 Timothy 2:15 ~
- Trust the Sword’s Power – Your effectiveness doesn’t depend on your own strength but on God’s Spirit working through His Word.
“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
~ Isaiah 55:11 ~
- Use the Sword with Grace – Every thrust of truth should carry the compassion of Christ, aiming to rescue, not destroy.
“Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.”
~ Ephesians 4:15 ~
This week, don’t leave your sword in its sheath. Open God’s Word daily. Speak it into your situations. Pray it over your family. Let it work in you so it can work through you.
Stay with us throughout this mini-series as we learn how to wield the Sword of the Spirit—not just to win battles, but to bring light, life, and freedom wherever we go.
So… Stay Strong. Shine Bright. Suit up.
And get ready—because next, we’re drawing The Sword of the Spirit to understand how to use it offensively.
