The two teenage boys wounded in the Sept. 10 Evergreen High School shooting were injured while trying to stop the alleged gunman and save other students’ lives, according to new details from authorities.
The big picture: The revelations highlight their bravery in the middle of a nine-minute attack that left two students hospitalized and the suspected shooter dead.
The latest: Authorities on Thursday said the second victim was a 14-year-old boy, whose family has yet to release his name. The other victim, identified earlier this month, is 18-year-old Matthew Silverstone.
Zoom in: The younger teen’s family said he and a friend confronted the assailant face-to-face before the 14-year-old was shot at close range.
- The teen then fled the building — warning classmates along the way — before collapsing at a nearby recreation center where an on-staff EMT rendered aid.
- He has undergone multiple surgeries for traumatic gunshot wounds, according to his family.
Silverstone has also been hailed a hero. Classmates wrote cards crediting him with urging students to flee and trying to disarm the shooter. “So many of us owe our safety to you,” a fellow student wrote in a card obtained by CPR.
- Outside of the school, Silverstone was seen grappling with the shooter before he was fired upon, the Denver Post reports.
- He remains in critical condition, “facing multiple surgeries and a long road to recovery” — but is showing “signs of improvement each day,” according to his family’s GoFundMe page.
