The conservative candidates—Sheldon Kier and Adena Kreutz—are best for Delta Schools

By Angie Many | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice

As Colorado mandates more and more laws affecting students and school districts, school board elections have become increasingly important. Unfortunately, despite the importance of electing members to guide school policies, such ‘off-year’ elections traditionally have poor voter turnout. ‘We the people’ need to start paying more attention and devoting a little time to learning more about the people who will have such an impact on the education – and the indoctrination – that our children receive. And then we need to vote.

Delta County has five candidates in this year’s school board election. Two of them will, in my opinion, help to restore common sense and sanity to school policies and keep government influence at a minimum.

Sheldon Kier and Adena Kreutz are both Christian, conservatives, and from the agricultural community, and they have experience teaching and working with students. They have both been endorsed by the local Republican Party.

They have worked hard to make themselves known to Delta County voters, attending forums and Meet-and-Greets, participating in newspaper questionnaires, putting ads on radio, and putting up signs across the county. They sincerely want to be part of the school board and to make a difference for our kids. Their election will give Delta County’s one conservative school board member, Beth Suppes, much needed support.

Adena is running against liberal incumbent Jennifer McGavin, who supports more LGBTQIA books and information in schools, and who is endorsed by “Decolonizing Delta County School District.”

This is, in my opinion, a pretty radical group, and their initiatives are what McGavin promotes. Go to https://de-colonizing-dcsd.com/our-initiatives/  and see what you think. I think I’d rather have Adena! (Also running for this district is Autumn Wynn.)

In addition, Jennifer McGavin was a featured speaker at a “Hands Off” rally last year and gave her speech under a sign that said “Hands Off Our Democracy Nazis” (https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=decolonizing%20delta%20county%20schools).

Calling an opposition political party ‘Nazis’ is most definitely not a good example for our students and encourages violence against those with dissenting opinions.

Sheldon is running against incumbent Kristina Hines, whom I expected to be conservative, but those expectations have not been realized. She seems to be reluctant to stand strong against boys in girls’ sports and locker rooms and for the religious rights of teachers. She has gone along with the liberal members of the board too often to suit me.

Sheldon strongly opposes biological males using women’s locker rooms and competing against females (as does Adena), and he supports the religious rights of teachers.

At a time when the State of Colorado is passing laws promoting LGBTQ+ and DEI theories and reducing the rights of parents, we need strong conservative board members. At a time when too many of our students can’t read, write, or do basic arithmetic at grade level, we need board members who will emphasize academics – reading, writing, history, civics, and math – instead of social issues.

Both Sheldon and Adena believe that literacy and critical thinking skills are vitally important and that we need to strengthen foundational skills in academic subjects. Both believe that parental communication and participation is important, and that school board members must exhibit fiscal responsibility.

Adena hopes to strengthen our schools by developing an active volunteer base, and Sheldon adds that strong agriculture programs can be a “launchpad for leadership, growing skilled students, strong communities, and a sustainable future.”

School boards have more power to set school policy and mitigate the application of state laws than most of us realize. That makes it imperative that we elect strong, conservative people to our school boards.
