Seventeen years ago, Ethiopian-born Amsalu Kassaw was a political refugee when he settled in Aurora.

“Aurora is more than a city to me; it’s a symbol of opportunity, diversity, and unity,” Kassaw said.

Seventeen years later, Kassaw is asking Aurora to support him once again. Kassaw has announced his candidacy for an at-large seat on City Council.

“From my early days of building a new life in America to becoming a proud citizen, this community has shaped who I am today,” he said. “Over the years, I have dedicated myself to promoting civic engagement, supporting small businesses and fostering collaboration among diverse communities.”

Kassaw was selected last year to fill the unexpired term of Dustin Zvonek. Kassaw is the first Ethiopian immigrant to hold the office, which has been cheered by the Ethio-American Development Council, saying at the time: “A huge congratulations to Amsalu Kassaw on being appointed to the Aurora City Council at-large, making history as the first immigrant on our City Council and the first Ethiopian American to hold an official public office in the State of Colorado.”

If elected, it would be Kassaw’s first full, four-year term.

He has worked in the security industry for more than 20 years, after graduating from Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa University.

“I’m focused on creating meaningful opportunities, safer communities, improving infrastructure and reducing barriers to economic growth,” Kassaw said. “This journey isn’t just about me — it’s about us. Together, we can unlock Aurora’s full potential and create a future defined by inclusivity, opportunity and resilience.”

Kassaw is hopeful his presence on the 11-member board gives a voice to immigrants.

“I’m honored to be not only a voice for the growing Ethiopian population, but the many immigrant and diverse communities that proudly call Aurora home,” Kassaw said. “These families and residents deserve a safe and vibrant city that continues to create opportunities for all to succeed, which is why I am running.”
