There will be two opposed races, one in each major party, for the Colorado Board of Education, meaning voters in two areas of the state will have decisions to make on their primary ballot.
Election Day is Tuesday, June 25. Registered voters should have received a mailed ballot or will in the coming days. Those Coloradans who are not yet registered to vote may do so in a couple of ways with various deadlines. Register at GoVoteColorado.gov through June 17, in order to receive a ballot by mail. Additionally, registration can be completed in person at a voting center until 7 p.m. on Election Day.
Colorado elects members to the state board of education based upon U.S. House of Representatives districts and one at-large seat. As voters reflect forward to the general election, Democrats presently have a 6-3 grasp on the board. Following are choices you may have, based upon your registration with a major party or as an unaffiliated voter:
District 1
Not on the ballot. Democrat Lisa Escárcega presently holds the position and is the vice chair of the board.
District 2
Democratic Party – Kathy Gebhardt and Marisol Lynda will appear on the ballot. The Northern Colorado seat is presently held by Democrat Angelika Schroeder.
Republican Party – No candidate will be listed on the ballot.
District 3
Democratic Party – Ellen Angeles will appear on the ballot.
Republican Party – Sherri M. Wright will appear on the ballot. The seat is presently held by Republican Stephen Varela, who is seeking election to the U.S. House.
District 4
Democratic Party – Krista Holtzmann will appear on the ballot.
Republican Party – Kristi Burton Brown and Saundra Larsen will appear on the ballot. The largely Eastern Colorado seat is presently held by Republican Debora Scheffel.
District 5
Not on the ballot. Republican Steve Durham presently holds the seat.
District 6
Not on the ballot. Democrat Rebecca McClellan presently holds the seat and is the chair of the board.
District 7
Not on the ballot. Democrat Karla Esser presently holds the seat.
District 8
Democratic Party – Rhonda Solis will appear on the ballot. Democrat Rhonda Solis currently holds the seat.
Republican Party – Yazmin Navarro will appear on the ballot.
At-Large
Not on the ballot. Democrat Kathy Plomer presently holds the seat.
