Bird flu case with “flu-like symptoms” reported in Colorado, 1 person hospitalized

By Alexander Tin | CBS Colorado The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed a third U.S. bird flu hospitalization, Wyoming's health department said Friday after a woman was admitted to a healthcare facility in neighboring Colorado.  The patient was experiencing "flu-like symptoms" and had "health conditions that can make people more vulnerable to illness," Wyoming's health department said. She was likely exposed to the H5N1 virus through direct contact to an infected poultry flock at her home. "Our staff has followed up with other people who had contact with the flock and the patient, and will continue working with state and national experts to monitor the situation carefully for Wyoming," Dr. Alexia Harrist, Wyoming's state health officer, said in ...

By Sarah Horbacewicz | CBS Colorado Legal battles continue as the strike at King Soopers locations across Colorado's Front Range near one week. As the strike continues, ripple effects are impacting more than just grocery store workers and store earnings; grocery delivery app drivers are also impacted. Some drivers like Megan Snavely say they can't afford to not cross the picket line. "I feel bad for still going in and shopping. However, as much as they see me in here, I do think that (union workers) are very understanding," Snavely said. Megan believes they understand that as a gig worker, she isn't necessarily filling her cart, but a trunk full of other people's groceries. As a local grocery app delivery driver, Snavely says most of her orders come from her local King Soopers loc...

Officials at one Colorado school district help student declare herself homeless before moving in with teacher

By Shaun Boyd | CBS Colorado The Jefferson County School District is apologizing to the parents of a Columbine High School student after school officials helped the student lie on a federal form and then hid it from her parents so she could move in with a teacher. According to investigators hired by the district, the student - a 17-year-old female - was involved in an inappropriate relationship with social studies teacher Leann Kearney. They say Kearney was "grooming" the girl.  Heather McCormick is friends with the girl's mom and says there were red flags long before the district hired investigators, "There's this icky feeling that something is wrong and as it progressed it only got worse. Not a single person stood up and said something doesn't seem right and reached out to ...

By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado The Aurora City Council is moving forward with a resolution that could bring city employees back to the office three days per week. Some council members say the resolution aims to bring back a sense of normalcy after the pandemic and foster community in the workplace. While not a mandate, they hope staff will begin to utilize the city's facilities more regularly. According to the resolution, the city says in-person work fosters collaboration, reduces isolation, and creates healthier boundaries between work and personal life. It also says operating empty city buildings wastes taxpayer dollars on utilities that could be better spent on community needs. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO
