As Colorado struggles with widespread retail theft, Wheat Ridge police take proactive approach

By Karen Morfitt | CBS Colorado FBI crime stats show Colorado is doing better than it has in the past when it comes to levels of violent crime. But the news isn't so good when it comes to property crime. Despite some improvement, Colorado remains far above the national average. ‘Yes to parks & rec’: Englewood city staff use taxpayer dollars for yard signs to pass $41.5M bond

By Ashley Portillo | CBS Colorado The City of Englewood is finding itself in the middle of possible campaign violations after the city used taxpayer dollars to pay for yard signs promoting a ballot measure to fund parks. Now, residents are being asked to return the yard signs that say, "Yes to Parks and Recreation - Support Englewood's Parks and Recreation Bond."  If the signs are not returned, the city asks those residents to pay for the cost of the signs. Englewood's city manager called it an "honest mistake," but there is still concern that city staff came too close to breaking the law when it paid for the signs encouraging voters to vote yes on the city's $41.5 million parks bond. Loveland residents may create new sales tax to replace tax they cut last year

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado Less than one year after Loveland residents overwhelmingly voted to eliminate sales tax on most groceries, a shortfall in the city's budget has now led to some residents asking for a new sales tax to be created. The tax cut, which only applied to groceries purchased for at-home consumption, has now resulted in the city losing millions of dollars in revenue. As CBS News Colorado reported in the fall of 2023, the city warned residents that approving the tax cut would force funding to city services to be cut. The city's planners forecasted that the budget lost would not be deducted from public safety services like police and fire. However, they predicted that entities like the city's parks and recreation and libraries could face cuts. Now, less than a ...

Aurora City Council goes virtual, making changes to rules for public comment

By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado The Aurora City Council voted to move forward with a resolution that would change the rules for public comment after recent meetings have been interrupted by protesters supporting the family of Kilyn Lewis, an unarmed Black man shot and killed by Aurora police.  On Monday, community members demanded justice for Lewis at the great lawn outside the Aurora Municipal Center. The rally took place ahead of a virtual city council meeting that many feel was strategically shifted to avoid public confrontation. Due to recent disruptions, the city made this week's meeting virtual. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

Gov. Polis signs four gun-control bills destined for legal challenges by pro-gun advocates

By CBS 11 News Colorado's governor signed four gun control bills Friday, following the lead of other states struggling to confront a nationwide surge in violent crime and mass shootings, despite a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that expanded Second Amendment rights. Before the ink was even dry on Gov. Jared Polis' signature, gun rights groups sued to reverse two of the measures: raising the buying age for any gun from 18 to 21, and establishing a three-day waiting period between the purchase and receipt of a gun. The courts are already weighing lawsuits over such restrictions in other states. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS 11 NEWS

Colorado realtor says Fed’s interest rate cut “a good time to make big purchases, especially homes”

By Michael Abeyta | CBS Colorado A Colorado real estate broker says Wednesday's announcement by the Federal Reserve that they are lowering the interest rate by .5 percentage points was somewhat expected and that he was somewhat ready for it. "I thought the Fed was going to be a little bit more conservative and do a 0.25 percentage cut. However, the 0.5 is where we're at. So not shock, not surprise," said Brett Weinstein, the CEO of Guide Real Estate. That means it costs consumers less in interest to borrow money. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

In 2023, rates jumped an average of 23%, with the pace continuing this year. Rates are up another 16% in 2024 and experts say it could top out at 22% before the end of the year. Steve Hakes is the owner of Rocky Mountain Insurance Center, a brokerage that helps Colorado consumers shop for carriers. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO
