Members-only auto race track on course for rural Adams County

By Gabriela Vidal, Jeff Gurney | CBS Colorado Look on Google Maps and you'll able to see a squiggly line on Colorado's plains just East of Denver International. Airport. It's the beginning of a members-only race track.    "It's a private racing facility," Nick Eagleson, Adams County senior strategic planner told CBS News Colorado.  "Adams County is growing -- obviously it is growing east. There's a lot of benefits because of the location and its proximity to DIA as well as downtown Denver," Eagleson said. Nine parcels of land purchased make up the 600-acre site. It will include a race track, go-cart facility and other venue facilities. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

Ah, grasshopper. They are everywhere in Colorado this year.

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado Coloradans across the Front Range, especially in Northern Colorado, have noticed significantly more grasshoppers this year. Researchers with Colorado State University confirm there has been a spike in grasshoppers across the state. "Colorado is seeing a very large number of grasshoppers, we have been getting reports from all around the state," said Lisa Mason, horticulture specialist and entomologist for CSU. Mason told CBS News Colorado's Dillon Thomas the grasshoppers we are seeing right now are the result of eggs buried in the dirt by grasshoppers in 2023 which were able to hatch as the result of a relatively warm and dry winter and spring. Squeegee workers could be cited at Denver intersections or highways

By Jasmine Arenas | CBS Colorado Police in Denver are warning windshield washers that they could be cited at Denver intersections.  This scenario has become so normal that drivers can actually count on a handful of people waiting for them at busy intersections. For the windshield washers, their ultimate goal is to make a buck or two. Groups of squeegee workers say Denver Police have stopped by a number of intersections and highways to hand out fliers letting them know that what they're doing is illegal - more specifically walking through intersections and asking for money. However, the groups say this is their only way of making ends meet. From sun up to sun down, groups of squeegee workers can be found at intersections in Denver hoping to make a few bucks. Colorado’s senators share terms as part of effort to protect Dolores Canyons

By Heather Willard | Fox 31 News After visiting the communities surrounding Dolores Canyons over the past few months, U.S. Sens. John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet released a joint statement on the path forward to protecting the federal lands, citing several principles they intend to follow. “For decades, Coloradans have worked to find a sensible way to protect the Dolores River,” the pair of senators said, noting the years of conversations with residents of the area about whether the Northern Dolores Canyons region should become a National Monument. “Based on these conversations, it is clear that Coloradans care deeply about this landscape and many want it permanently protected. We also recognize there are legitimate questions and the need for further discussion,” the statement...

Moose on Northern Plains? Three have been spotted in Nunn

Two cows and one bull moose have been spotted recently making their way through the small town of Nunn, east of I-25.  According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the three moose have been spotted in the area in the last two days. It is believed they followed rivers and creeks east, ultimately bringing them into Weld County.  Viewers Aidan and Abi Holsten shared the video with CBS News Colorado's Dillon Thomas showing the moose trotting around through rural yards. The video was taken from a distance and from indoors.  CPW encouraged humans to not try and approach the moose, noting that they are ...

From plastic forks to water bottles to ice cream cups, in Breckenridge it is all banned

By Spencer Wilson | CBS Colorado Breckenridge's ordinance banning single-use plastics -- like plastic forks and plastic water bottles -- has entered its second phase as of July 1. A similar ban in Frisco took effect last year before Colorado's statewide ban. Businesses in town are expected to either stop selling plastic water bottles or find alternatives. They are also expected to find different containers for things like plastic ice cream cups or utensils. Jessie Burley, sustainability and parking manager for the town of Breckenridge, said there will still be a few things that need to be removed but are not yet. "A guacamole container for example," Burley said, referencing the single-use fresh guac container at a local supermarket. "Things that should ...

Firefighters who responded on 9/11 escort piece of twin towers to new Fort Collins memorial

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado A piece of American history has been permanently installed in Fort Collins, as Poudre Fire Station #3 cemented a piece of the twin towers into the park behind their fire station. The piece of the twin towers was officially unveiled at a ceremony in Fort Collins on Monday afternoon. The piece of steel, which stands several feet tall, serves as a reminder to the Northern Colorado community of what the U.S. has been through, and the sacrifices many paid for freedom. "We just don't want people to forget," said Jim Durkin, a former firefighter who responded to ground zero. Durkin, Jim Salisbury and Lin Lindholm are just three of the many now-retired Poudre Fire employees who helped dig for survivors in 2001. The same group of men were those who helped...

Colorado wolf tracker map shows new exploration in areas of Summit, Larimer counties

By Spencer Wilson | CBS Colorado According to a new collared wolf activity map published by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the Colorado wolf territory has grown and spread over the last month further south, east, and west. This, while leaving out of a small section of Routt County the wolves had previously spent time in.  According to the map (which depicts watershed locations, meaning if a wolf steps foot into a new watershed and then steps back out, it will still show up instead of actual locations) gray wolves have pushed into Larimer County just outside Red Feather Lakes, and southwest into portions of Eagle and Rio Blanco counties.  READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO
