In response to CBI scandal, lawmakers seek mandatory reporting, investigation of misconduct

By Marianne Goodland | Colorado Politics As calls mounted for policymakers to address the DNA scandal swirling at the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, legislators requested a state audit and introduced two bills, one of which seeks to require mandatory reporting and investigation of misconduct.   In a news conference on Thursday, lawmakers said that's one factor that was was lacking in the case involving a once-revered DNA scientist at the state lab.  House Bill 1275 is about transparency, said Reps. System update-related delays to tax return processing near end, Department of Revenue says

By Marissa Ventrelli | Colorado Politics The Colorado Department of Revenue announced that it will soon begin processing state income tax returns following weeks of delays. While no specific date was given, the department said it should be accepting returns some time this week.  The delays stemmed from system updates required to implement a number of recent changes to the sate tax code. House Bill 1272 — introduced on Tuesday and first reported by Colorado Politics last week — would require a third-party, independent inspector to make periodic checks during the condo construction process. The builder would be tasked with responding to problems identified by the inspector and fixing them. Bipartisan bill to increase gun theft penalties advances out of House committee, into appropriations

By Marissa Ventrelli  | Colorado Politics A bill increasing penalties for gun theft narrowly cleared its first hurdle on Tuesday, passing through the House Judiciary Committee by one vote.   House Bill 1062, sponsored by Majority Leader Monica Duran, D-Wheat Ridge, and Rep. Ryan Armagost, R-Berthoud, would exempt firearms from the state's sentencing structure for theft, making it a Class 6 felony, regardless of the firearm's value.  The bill passed on a 6-5 vote and will move on to the Appropriations Committee, as it carries a fiscal note of nearly $400,000 for the 2025-2026 fiscal year and nearly $1 million for 2026-2027. Her resignation comes in the wake of revelations that she "fabricated" at least one letter of support from a former aide in her 17-page response to the ethics committee on Jan. 31. Questions have also been raised about the authenticity of four other letters of support. Poll shows Coloradans prioritize gun theft prosecution over passing new laws

By Marianne Goodland | Colorado Politics As the Colorado Senate readies for debate on a measure to ban semi-automatic weapons with detachable magazines, a new poll shows residents prefer to see more of focus on prosecuting crime, including gun thefts, rather than enacting stricter gun laws. Indeed, respondents said lawmakers should prioritize improving the economy, addressing illegal immigration, confronting "climate issues" and fixing homelessness. Changing gun law hovered in the low single digits in the respondents' priority list.      The poll, which was released this week was conducted by Arc Insights and sampled 603 registered Colorado voters between Feb. 4 and Feb. 5, had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.99 points.
