Affidavit: Anti-violence activist arrested in suspected revenge killing

By Morgan Whitley | Fox 31 News A well-known anti-violence advocate was arrested in connection to a deadly shooting at a Commerce City park in what detectives are investigating as retaliation for his son’s shooting death a year prior. Lumumba Sayers Sr., 46, was arrested in connection to the shooting that left one dead at Pioneer Park on Saturday. Sayers Sr. founded the Aurora-based nonprofit Heavy Hands Heavy Hearts, which is aimed at helping young people in the community. 11 puppies euthanized after 1 tests positive for rabies

By Rachel Saurer | Fox 31 News  Since a puppy at an adoption event in Sheridan tested positive for rabies last month, 11 puppies have been euthanized. The positive puppy came to Colorado from Texas and was at a July 20 puppy adoption event at Moms and Mutts Colorado, a rescue for pregnant and nursing dogs. “We have adoption events every Saturday, and so it was a pretty normal day. By Debbie Kelley | Denver Gazette A sentencing that took four and a half hours in federal district court in Washington, D.C., Monday afternoon left 72-year-old great-grandmother Rebecca Lavrenz of Falcon with no prison time for her participation in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol breach. What a magistrate judge did levy for her April 4 conviction on four misdemeanor counts: one year of probation, six months of house arrest with an ankle monitor as soon as she returns to her residence located about 14 miles northeast of Colorado Springs — and a $103,000 fine for funds she’s raised from the public. “I think it was a miracle that I don’t have to go to prison — that I am grateful for,” Lavrenz said by phone after the sentencing. Clerk Peters had been told that the new software installation in 2021 known as the “Trusted Build”, ordered by Secretary of State Jena Griswold, would erase the 2020 and 2021 election data. Three weekend shootings in Commerce City resulted in four deaths

By Heather Willard | Fox 31 News Three violent incidents that led to four deaths were all reported out of Commerce City this weekend, starting Friday at about 8 p.m. Police said none of the events were related, and the locations ranged across the city. Joanna Small, Commerce City Police Department public information officer, said the fact that they are isolated incidents makes the weekend all the more unusual. Small also noted that Commerce City, on average, sees a handful of deadly shootings each year. By Jesse Sarles | CBS Colorado Some roads and mountain passes were closed near Telluride on Monday morning after heavy weekend storms in western Colorado resulted in flooding and mudslides. The storms also caused a closure of Highway 85 between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale. The passes that were closed were Bear Pass and Imogene Pass. Man dies after falling from paddleboard at Carter Lake in Larimer County

By Jesse Sarles | CBS Colorado A man who was paddleboarding died over the weekend in Larimer County. It happened on Saturday afternoon on Carter Lake, located west of Berthoud. Officials from the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said a witness reported that the man wasn't wearing a life jacket. The witness saw the man fall into the water and said he didn't resurface. Divers first tried to locate him using sonar. Then, a few hours later, first responders searched the area where the man was last seen and found him. The man's identity hasn't been released. Finance manager who served for four decades has retired from Town of Brush

By Robin Northrup | Brush News-Tribune The City of Brush celebrated the dedicated career of Joanne Gosselink, the town’s finance manager, at a retirement open house held at The Course at Petteys Park. Gosselink, who has served the town for 42 years, is set to retire and says her last day will be July 31. Despite stepping down, Gosselink will continue to contribute to the community as a member of the Brush Rodeo Association Board. When asked about her plans after retiring, she said she has no plans yet but may do some traveling. She added that she will take some time for herself and will be bringing out her craft supplies. Puppy at Englewood adoption event tested positive for rabies, Colorado health officials warn

By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is contacting people who attended a puppy adoption event last month in one Colorado city. The health department is screening attendees after a puppy tested positive for rabies on Wednesday. CDPHE says the rabies-positive puppy came from Texas and has since been euthanized. The puppy was part of an adoption event with its 11 littermates at Moms and Mutts Colorado Rescue for Pregnant and Nursing Dogs, located at 2721 West Oxford Avenue in Englewood on July 20.
