‘We have reached the end of our rope’: Business owners call on city leaders to solve vagrancy in rural town

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice FORT MORGAN -- Vagrants are trespassing in residential and business property, doing drugs in public, urinating and defecating in the library and other public places, and in general becoming an out-of-control public nuisance. It would be just another day in Denver, but this isn't Denver. It is Fort Morgan on the Eastern Plains of Colorado, where neighbors have known each other for decades in the town of about 12,000 and residents rarely unite to air their grievances in the happy-go-lucky community. Until now. Residents are telling city leadership they have had enough. "We have reached the end of our rope," said Malori Rudnik, owner of Double R Embroidery at Main Street and Beaver Avenue adjacent to Glenn Miller Park. "We have found needles ...

Candidates rally support at Delta County’s ‘Food and Freedom Forum’

By Jen Schumann | Contributor, Rocky Mountain Voice Conservative candidates and their supporters came together recently at the Delta County 'Food and Freedom Forum,’ hosted by Dave and Sue Whittlesey at High Wire Ranch.  Cedaredge resident Mark Hillen shared why the upcoming election is important and his reason for attending: “2024 is a pivotal year for our nation. We’re standing at a crossroads — one path leads us toward socialism, and the other offers a chance to preserve our republic."  Colorado State Representative Matt Soper agreed. "We’re becoming increasingly similar to California in terms of tax policy, but the passage of House Bill 24B-1001 was a significant victory for conservatives," he said. "The property tax cuts passed in the special session are tangible — real cu...

Denver’s fur ban initiative has fly-fishers and cowboy hat makers worried too

By Joe Rubino | Denver 7, via The Denver Post The Denver Fur Ban is a succinct title for a ballot measure. But opponents of the November initiative say its effects will be anything but simple, and they prefer to wrangle with specifics when they make their points. Initiated Ordinance 308 — which seeks to prohibit the manufacturing, sale, trade and display of select fur products — would have a raft of consequences that go beyond prohibiting retailers in the Mile High City from selling fox and raccoon fur coats, those opponents say. Video shows trooper being ‘ambushed’ while parked along highway, State Patrol chief says

By Olivia Prentzel | The Colorado Sun Authorities believe a 32-year-old Thornton man saw a Colorado State Patrol trooper parked along a median as a “target of opportunity” before he slowed down and fired multiple rounds from a semi-automatic pistol at the trooper through his window, striking the trooper in his arm. Dashcam footage released Monday showed the rear passenger window of a trooper’s truck shatter as Victor Anthony De Santiago fired shots at Cpl. Tye Simcox, who was parked along a median on U.S. 36 on Sept. 7.  Simcox then got out of his car with a rifle and returned fire, killing De Santiago. READ THE FULL STORY AT THE COLORADO SUN

Gaines: Progressive press slathers bias on Venezuelan gang story

By Cory Gaines | Commentary, Complete Colorado I feel sorry for the residents of the Aurora apartment complex dealing that have ended up in the national spotlight as part of the Venezuelan gang story as of late.  Besides living in what seems like crappy conditions, they have all unwittingly become a bone to be fought over.  I agree with Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman, as he recently told the Colorado Sun, when he says that he feels this whole situation “… has been exploited for political gain.” What Mayor Coffman, and many others, may have missed (or perhaps ignored) is the progressive media also taking advantage of the situation, even though it’s right up front for all to see.  For example, the Sun titled its article “Is racism fueling claims about a Venezuelan g...

Conifer councilman charged in altercation in which teen was allegedly shot in face

By Austen Erblat, Alan Gionet | CBS Colorado Brent Metz, the Colorado town councilman accused of shooting a 17-year-old boy in the face last week, has been formally charged. Metz is accused of shooting the teen who, along with his friend, say they hopped a fence to knock on a Conifer property owner's door to get permission to take high school homecoming photos. When it appeared no one was home, they went back to their car on the side of the road to write a note for the property owner. According to an arrest report, Metz pulled up in his truck, pulled a handgun and shot the 17-year-old through the windshield of his Audi. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

Denver’s Initiative 309 slaughterhouse ban impacts national lamb supply chain

By Lindy Browning | Contributor, Rocky Mountain Voice  As J Paul Brown of Ignacio, Colo., gets ready to bring his sheep back to the lowlands for the fall roundup, he contemplates the impact of Denver’s Initiative 309, which singles out the largest lamb processing plant in Colorado for closure.  He worries that, if passed, the state has, yet again, compromised the domestic food chain.  Superior Farms has been singled out by this ballot initiative for closure after an animal rights activist group, Pro-Animal Future, championed the initiative.  Superior Farms has been in business since its founding in 1964 and is a 100 percent employee owned facility that currently employs upwards of 170 direct employees.  “I find it so ironic that the very same people, who support loc...
