In Lakewood, residents want closed Jefferson Co. school to be park or open space, but it’s for sale

By Karen Morfitt | CBS Colorado One of Jefferson County's closed schools is on the open market and those living nearby are fighting to keep the property as open space or even a park. Residents around the now-shuttered Vivian Elementary School worry with more development comes more traffic and more safety risks and say the donated property should remain as a community hub. It comes roughly one year after parents lost an effort to keep the doors open for students at the school. "This is a gem you don't just bulldoze you can't pave paradise and put up a parking lot this is perfect just leave it be," Toby Crisp said. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

Todd Chamberlain selected by Aurora City Council as new police chief over some community concerns

By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado Members of the Aurora City Council voted Monday to confirm Todd Chamberlain as the new police chief. Several citizens voiced strong opposition, criticizing the lack of community involvement in the decision-making process. Aurora City Manager Jason Batchelor described Chamberlain as a "seasoned professional who has a deep understanding of fair, ethical, consistent and constitutional policing." Councilmembers in favor of Chamberlain asked the community to give him a chance. "We've had revolving door of interim police chiefs, and we need stability in this department. You guys want accountability. You want us to have better training. This is what he's about," said Councilmember Françoise Bergan. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

Flying out of DIA? In many cases, your walk to gate could be well over a mile

By Spencer McKee | Out There Colorado If you think you're walking a bit far to reach your gate at Denver International Airport, you might not be wrong – but then again, it is one of the busiest airports in the country. A recent piece from Reader's Digest took at look at how long some people have to walk to reach their gate at various airports around the country, and while DIA didn't snag the first place spot for 'longest walk,' it did end up ranking 4th. The longest 'airport walk' nationwide is found at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, coming in at a distance of 2.16 miles. Denver International Airport's longest walk, however, isn't much shorter, at 1.45 miles. READ THE FULL STORY AT OUT THERE COLORADO

By Noah Festenstein | Denver Gazette Amid a homeless crisis plaguing Colorado’s most populated city, a county just south of Denver claims to have found an effective solution to curbing homelessness in its communities. In a campaign to mitigate homelessness, Douglas County officials emphasized one simple message: “Handouts don’t help.” They urged residents, for example, against giving money to homeless people on roadways or sidewalks. From 2022 to 2024, Douglas County witnessed a steep drop in homeless people living on the streets, from 43 to six, according to a recent point-in-time count report conducted by several local third party nonprofits. Bringing back the speakeasy, ‘Lincolns’ opens in Denver with super-secret location

By Maddie Rhodes | Fox 31 News A new bar just opened in downtown Denver as a basement lounge with drinks costing only $5, and that’s including tax. The only catch is the bar is hidden, so you’ll have to find it yourself. The bar, known as Lincolns, has no extra hidden fees for the $5 drinks. It keeps it honest, just like Abraham Lincoln, hence the name, owner Mark Ohlson told FOX31. “Lincolns is where the lawyer, hipster, electrician and college student all meet in agreement around what the value of a dollar is,” Ohlson said. Boulder weighing minimum wage bump to $16.58 in 2025, another $1 in 2026, 2027

By John Herrick | Boulder Reporting Lab The Boulder City Council is considering raising the city’s minimum wage to between $15.57 per hour and $16.58 per hour starting next year, with additional increases of over a dollar in each of the following two years. A final decision is expected later this year.  If approved, the wage hike would impact thousands of workers currently earning the state minimum wage of $14.42 per hour. Labor advocates want the city council to raise the minimum wage to $25 per hour by 2030, but councilmembers were noncommittal during a meeting on Thursday, Aug. 22. They said they were concerned about the impact on small businesses facing higher labor costs, even as they agreed the increase is necessary to help workers afford to live in Boulder. READ THE F...
