Denver’s Failed Universal Income Program Opens the Floodgates to Non-Citizen Migrants

SOURCE: THELOBBY-CO.COM In a controversial move that has sparked outrage among many citizens, the city of Denver's bankrupting sanctuary city policies have extended the eligibility of their failed universal income program to non-citizen migrants. The Denver Basic Income Program, which was initially introduced in 2021 with $2 million in funding from the city, has now announced its extension for another six months starting in February 2024. The program, which pays homeless individuals a regular stipend, was intended to assist citizens in need. However, the recent decision to include non-citizen migrants raises serious concerns about the city's financial stability and its commitment to prioritizing its own residents. According to the city's statement, the $2 million allocated ...

State Sen. Perry Will Moves from State Legislature to a County Commissioner Race

SOURCE: THELOBBY-CO.COM State Senator Perry Will announced his decision to step down from the state legislature and run for a position on the Garfield County Board of County Commissioners. The move comes as Will’s decision adds him to a competitive race following the retirement of longtime county commissioner John Martin. With the departure of Martin from the county commissioner position, the race to fill the vacancy has attracted several candidates. Among them, Silt resident Caleb Waller is the only other Republican who has filed to run for the county commissioner seat. Additionally, Democrats Caitlin Carey and Doug Salg have entered the race, highlighting the increasing political diversity in Garfield County. Garfield County, once a stronghold of conservative values, has rec...

Former state lawmaker Janak Joshi jumps in GOP congressional primary in Colorado’s 8th

By Ernest Luning, Colorado Politics Former state Rep. Janak Joshi on Friday joined the field of Republicans hoping to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo in Colorado's 8th Congressional District. Vowing he'll be "big government's worst enemy," the former physician, who represented Colorado Springs districts for three terms last decade in the legislature, said his unabashedly conservative track record makes him the best candidate to win the battleground seat, which could decide which party controls the U.S. House of Representatives after this year's election. “I’m the only candidate in this race with a proven conservative record to show that actions speak louder than mere words," Joshi said in statement to Colorado Politics. "We already have too many say-anything pol...

By Anna Lynn WinfreyJosué Perez | SOURCE: THE PUEBLO CHIEFTAIN Heather Graham appears to be the next mayor of the city of Pueblo. She took a decisive lead in the first round of unofficial results posted by the Pueblo City Clerk's Office Tuesday evening and incumbent Mayor Nick Gradisar called Graham to concede. Graham was up by nearly 6,000 votes with over 22,500 counted when the first batch of unofficial results were reported just before 7:30 p.m. She said those initial results showed that the "people of Pueblo have spoken." “I feel relieved to know that the city of Pueblo will now move in a different direction,” Graham told the Chieftain. Gradisar joked that he was looking forward to being a "has been" but congratulated Graham on her victory. The race between Gra...

Map released showing where Colorado wolves roamed

By Luige Del Puerto | SOURCE: DENVER GAZETTE Colorado wildlife officials on Wednesday published a map showing where wolves have roamed in the past month, but it does not pinpoint where the animals are in real time. To protect the wolves, officials said they won't release specific GPS data. The administration of Gov. Jared Polis produced the map on the day legislators grilled wildlife officials over what policymakers described as communication failures and problems tied to the release of wolves in Grand and Summit counties last month.  During a hearing, lawmakers said the state mishandled communications, destroying trust with ranchers and landowners. They said those ranchers and land owners are now saying they will no longer work with the state's wildlife division on conser...

Additional students buoy Denver schools’ budget

By Nicole C. Brambila | SOURCE: DENVER GAZETTE An unexpected influx of students this academic year means Denver Public Schools might not have to dip into its reserves, the district’s chief financial officer said this week. The Board of Education is expected to review the district’s amended budget when directors meet on Thursday for their regular meeting. The budget for the state’s largest district this school year is about $1.5 billion. District officials had anticipated using $12 million from reserves to help offset budget shortfalls. The district has roughly $140 million in its fund balance, which is on target for its 10% of budget goal, said Chuck Carpenter, chief financial officer for Denver Public Schools. New councilwoman investigated for shady spending habits after entire staff quits

SOURCE: COLORADO PEAK POLITICS Shady spending habits by newly elected Denver City Councilwoman Flor Alvidrez, including $14,000 for a Halloween parade float, are under investigation by an ethics panel. The complaint was filed by one of her staffers, all of whom quit after only five months. More than $4,200 of that parade float money went to her ex-husband. The ethics board is investigating the suspect spending that also includes alcohol purchases, a $300 flight upgrade for a trip to Chile, and a questionable per diem payment. Denverite broke the story: These records show Alvidrez requesting reimbursements for things potentially barred under spending rules or that raised concerns about spending transparency among her staff. The complaint document also alleges that Al...

Another Antisemitic Protest in Downtown Denver Organized by Pro-Palestinian Groups

SOURCE: THELOBBY-CO.COM Pro-Palestinian protesters once again disrupted downtown Denver as they marched along Speer Boulevard near the Auraria campus on Monday. The demonstration, organized by the Party of Socialism and Liberation, caused police to shut down streets in the area, further inconveniencing local residents, traffic, and businesses. The group of protesters, wielding signs that read "Free Palestine" and "End the aid, no more funds," displayed their support for the Palestinian cause while spreading a disturbing message of animosity towards Israel. These signs not only advocate for the dismantling of Israel but also call for the cessation of financial aid to a country that has been a long-standing ally of the United States.
