Incoming Denver DA to get pay bump to oversee 6,000 felony, nearly 8,000 misdemeanor cases each year

By Deborah Grigsby  | Colorado Politics, via Denver Gazette Incoming Denver District Attorney John Walsh hasn’t even been sworn in and he’s already set to get a pay raise — although he’ll have to wait a year before it shows up in his bank account. In its last meeting of the year on Monday, the Denver City Council voted, 9-2, to approve an amended version of his plea for an annual pay increase for his office. Walsh first brought the request to the Dec. 4 Safety, Housing, Education & Homelessness Committee, where he asked for a 4% annual pay raise beginning next year, which would have placed his starting salary at $254,609 instead of $244,816. He said he had to ask for a pay raise now — otherwise, that window is foreclosed for the next four years. READ THE FULL STORY AT COLOR...

JonBenét Ramsey’s father to meet with police, urge use of new DNA technology

By Laura Ingle | Fox 21 News, via News Nation The Boulder Police Department says it plans to use new DNA technology in hopes of solving the killing of 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey in 1996. Ramsey’s body was found 28 years ago in her family’s Boulder home. Now, her father is planning to meet once again with local police to discuss new DNA testing technology that may hopefully fill in the forensic gaps and bring closure to the Ramsey family. “They have the ability to separate DNA — mixed DNA samples, which is one of the issues with the sample they got in 1997. They had an unidentified male DNA sample in early 1997, and it was mixed, apparently with JonBenét’s blood,” JonBenét’s father, John Bennett Ramsey, told NewsNation in November. “That DNA can now, technology-...

In Wellington 2.0, some Englewood residents can’t believe their water bills

By Catie Cheshire | Westword When Austin Lunn-Rhue received a new water meter through the City of Englewood last summer, he thought his usual bill of around $110 per month would go down. Much to his surprise, when he opened his bill in September, it totaled $322. Lunn-Rhue isn't alone. This fall, Englewood residents received water bills that didn’t add up, with soaring charges and nonsensical usage graphs showing triple the previously measured water usage for many customers. After Westword compiled six different water bills from Englewood residents, a pattern emerged: water usage graphs at the top of each bill showed zero use for anyone in July, August or September, but then a skyrocketing bar for October. By Scott Weiser | Colorado Politics, via The Gazette Denver has postponed a deadline for large building owners to comply with a major energy reduction plan and also terminated compliance targets due in three years. Denver’s Office of Climate Action, Sustainability and Resiliency announced the series of actions on Monday. First, the "Energize Denver" target for 2025 compliance was moved to 2026, while the 2027 compliance target was eliminated. The 2030 final compliance target remains, but the city said that, if needed, buildings may establish an alternative timeline through the "Energize Denver" process. As ‘transit-oriented’ law takes hold in Colorado, some see erosion of home rule

By Scott Weiser | Colorado Politics, via The Gazette A new law that mandates more than 30 Front Range municipalities incorporate state housing density goals along transit routes will lead to messy conflicts over contractual obligations and yet another erosion of Colorado's long history of local control over zoning and building regulation, according to critics. Supporters, on the other hand, argue that the high cost of housing is a problem that needs to be fixed, and Coloradans don't care who solves it — their local government or state actors. "It's certainly arguable that the reasonable expectations of parties to contracts could be adversely affected by state regulation," said Jack Luellen, special counsel at the Buchalter law firm. "And it really leaves the homeowner or the ...
