House GOP campaign arm names Colorado’s Jeff Hurd, Gabe Evans to ‘Young Guns’ program

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics The National Republican Congressional Committee announced Monday that the Republican nominees in Colorado's most competitive congressional races were named to the House GOP campaign arm's Young Guns program for top challengers in targeted seats. First-time candidate Jeff Hurd and state Rep. Gabe Evans, R-Fort Lupton, are among 26 Republican House candidates inducted into the top tier of the campaign support program, which helps candidates who have met fundraising and organizational goals, the NRCC said. Hurd, a Grand Junction attorney, is facing Democrat Adam Frisch in the 3rd Congressional District, which covers most of the Western Slope and Southern Colorado, and Evans is running against first-term Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo in the N...

‘We must protect our kids’: Lundberg calls for ‘all hands on deck’ to help get initiatives to the ballot

By BRIAN PORTER \ Rocky Mountain Voice The final days are winding down in an effort by Protect Kids Colorado to collect the signatures needed to get two initiatives on the fall ballot, former Sen. Kevin Lundberg wrote Monday in an email newsletter. Protect Kids Colorado, a coalition of grassroots citizens, worked to push Proposition 142 and 160 through the process to reach the ballot, Lundberg said. Each initiative needs 125,000 valid signatures before Wednesday, July 31. Following is the language of each measure: Prop. 142: Any public school representative who obtains information that a child enrolled in their public school is experiencing gender incongruence shall notify the child's parents. Prop. 160: Only female students, based on their biological sex at birth, may part...

House District 22 is now a three-candidate race in El Paso County

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A third candidate has joined the field in the Colorado House District 22 general election race. The signature petition of Daniel Campaña was certified last week by the secretary of state's office. He submitted 1,253 signatures, of which 1,056 were accepted to clear the minimum requirement of 1,000 valid signatures. Campaña joins the race which already was opposed. Republican Ken DeGraaf, who presently holds the seat, earned 9,538 votes in an unopposed Republican Party primary election. Democrat Michael Pierson collected 4,635 votes in an unopposed Democratic Party primary election. The district lies entirely in El Paso County. "Like 51% of our district, I'm an unaffiliated, which is really cool," Campaña says in a video at his campaign ...

‘We are in crisis mode’: After meeting is blocked, Republicans further discuss removal of chairman

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice BRIGHTON -- A who's who of Colorado Republican Party leadership here Saturday was still unable to answer a pressing question: Are they a minority faction or a unified movement for change? It could not be answered, they say, because a court order prevented their meeting of the party's Central Committee. Those in attendance here at Faith Fellowship Church had planned to discuss the removal of State Chairman Dave Williams, and possibly his vice-chair and secretary in a sweeping change at the state office. The court order preventing it was decided about 24 hours earlier, reportedly without their notice. "We are in crisis mode," Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer said. "We are one vote from a super majority in the [State] Senate and in the [State] House of 65 me...

If the chairman were to be removed, who leads the Colorado GOP? These three say they can

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice BRIGHTON -- If the Central Committee were to clean house at Colorado Republican Party headquarters and remove all state officers, as has been proposed by a faction of the committee, who might assume leadership? A non-meeting "rally" at Faith Fellowship Church here on Saturday, July 27, may have begun to answer that question. In fact, a couple committee members in attendance proposed they had found all three officers -- those candidates to become chairman who stayed to participate in an impromptu question-and-answer session. Those candidates were Eli Bremer, Richard Holtorf and Brita Horn. Also seeking the chairmanship is Steven Peck. "I would argue I might not make a very good secretary, if you look at my notes today," Holtorf joked with the ...

Alert: Meeting converted to rally in Brighton at 9 a.m.

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A meeting which could have led to the removal of the Colorado Republican Party's chairman and possibly other leadership, and the election of a new chairman, was cancelled late Friday night. It has been converted into a rally for conservative causes. The rally is at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at Brighton's Harvest Fellowship Church, 11401 E. 160th Ave. The notice of the rally appears as if no discussion of the prior meeting's purpose will take place. It indicates those who had expressed interest in running for chairman in March's re-organizational meeting will speak. Those persons could be Eli Bremer, Richard Holtorf, Brita Horn, Jay Misary and Steve Peck. The rally will also include presentations from Protect Kids Colorado, Colorado Life In...

Colorado GOP faces transparency issues amid critical race controversies

By Rocky Mountain Voice Staff Amidst ongoing internal conflicts and strategic disputes, the Colorado Republican Party faces significant challenges concerning transparency and the manner in which it communicates its support for certain electoral races. The party leadership has outlined a list of "critical races," including several congressional districts and state legislative seats, such as CD3, CD8, SD5, SD6, SD12, HD43, HD16, HD19, HD25, HD26, HD50, HD57, SD13, and SD16.  This list of races targeted for strategic support in the upcoming elections was never formally communicated to many within the party, including some county chairs and leadership. This list was only discovered indirectly through the likes of concerned candidates.  Financial reports also reveal a concern...

Two new ballot initiatives, for parole eligibility and school choice, submit signatures to secretary of state

By Deborah Grigsby | Colorado Politics Two more initiatives vying for a spot on the November ballot have submitted signatures to the Secretary of State. One would delay parole eligibility for violent offenders and the other, an amendment to the state constitution would guarantee parents the right to direct their children’s education. Proposition 112, also known by its unofficial title as Concerning Eligibility for Parole would require any person convicted and sentenced for second degree murder, first degree assault, first degree kidnapping unless the first degree kidnapping is a class 1 felony, first degree arson, first degree burglary, or aggravated robbery, committed on or after July 1, 2004, but before Jan. 1, 2025, to serve 85% of the sentence imposed before being eligible for...

Brita Horn announces bid for chair of the Colorado GOP

Brita Horn, a well-known leader in Colorado politics, has announced her candidacy for the chair position of the Colorado Republican Party. The move comes as part of a broader effort to steer the party in a new direction, following a period of controversy and internal conflict under the current leadership, according to her announcement. Horn's journey into public service began with a defining moment on Sept. 11, 2001, which ignited her passion for volunteerism and community leadership. Rooted deeply in her Christian values, Horn has dedicated her life to serving others. She played a pivotal role in establishing the Rock Creek Volunteer Fire Department in McCoy, Colo., where she serves as the fire chief. Her leadership ensures not only fire protection, but also emergency services and v...

El Paso County GOP chair Vickie Tonkins leads censure against party’s vice chair, demands he resign

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics The quarrel between Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams and a group of Republicans attempting to oust him from his position spilled over into local party politics this week when the El Paso County GOP's governing board voted to reprimand the party's second-in-command for spearheading the move to fire Williams, among other alleged "malicious acts." Add it to a growing pile of contradictory censure resolutions, disputed party meetings, dueling cease and desist orders, lawsuits both filed and threatened, and daily accusations that the other side is engaging in "illegal" activities — all part of a months-long struggle for control of the Colorado GOP. It could come to a head Saturday at a church in Brighton, when members of the sta...
