By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Voters in both the Democratic and Republican Party's primary elections weighed in and Tuesday night their general election nominees were selected. There were two races at the top of the ballot with six candidates, while other top-line races were head-to-head and in some cases unopposed. The nominees now advance to the general election. Republican Gabe Evans wins primary in Colorado’s battleground 8th Congressional District

By Ernest Luning| Denver Gazette Evans, a first-term state lawmaker from Fort Lupton, held a commanding lead over former state Rep. Janak Joshi, who moved into the 8th Congressional District from Colorado Springs earlier this year. The Associated Press called the race for Evans at 7:23 p.m., shortly after initial results posted. Evans was leading with 29,101 votes, or 78% of those tallied, in results posted by 8 p.m. to the Colorado secretary of state's website. Joshi trailed with 8,235 votes, or 22%.  Targeted by both national parties, the battleground seat — stretching north of the Denver metro area from Adams County suburbs to Greeley — is Colorado's newest congressional district, created ahead of the 2022 election. Jeff Hurd, a self-appointed first-time politician, came out victorious in the Republican primary and will face Democratic candidate Adam Frisch in the general election in November. Hurd has said he is planning on running a serious campaign for rural Coloradans in a traditionally conservative district. With 91% of the votes counted, Hurd won by approximately 42%. Instead of knocking doors, meeting with supporters or other activities that would have helped his campaign, Richard Holtorf spent Sunday coming to the rescue on Buffalo Springs Ranch, where he operates a cattle feeder operation. The water table dropped and the pasture wells were not pumping water, Holtorf's campaign manager Rhonda Brandt explained to The Independent. The Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association’s investments grew by 13.4% in 2023, according to its annual financial report released Friday. That matches its 13.4% loss from a year earlier. But because the pension has to average 7.25% returns a year to meet its funding targets, the net result was a step backward for the chronically underfunded pension.
