Auto accident prevents Fabbricatore from competing for nomination in special election

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice HUGO -- The Republican Congressional Vacancy Committee convened here Thursday evening with nine candidates vying to be nominated to a place on the 4th District Congressional special election ballot. But, there should have been 10 candidates. John Fabbricatore was unable to participate when he was involved in an auto accident on the way to Hugo, reads a social media post he wrote. "I was involved in a vehicle accident that disabled my vehicle and kept me from making it to the event in Hugo, before the first round of votes were cast," he wrote. The committee ruled he must be in attendance for his nomination to be entertained, Fabbricatore wrote. Nine candidates were nominated, and he would have been the 10th. His campaign manager a...

Placeholder won, but voting signaled who’s leading in race to replace Buck

By Colorado Peak Politics Republican delegates rolled through six rounds of balloting before finally choosing Greg Lopez to serve as a placeholder for the remainder of Ken Buck’s congressional term representing the 4th District. But first, Lopez must win the special General Election on June 25 against whomever the Democrats chose as their candidate. Democrats are already attacking on social media with old clips of Kyle Clark throwing mud at Lopez, the former mayor of Parker and GOP gubernatorial candidate. Media coverage this morning is also focused on rehashing Lopez’s previous negative media coverage in an attempt convince Republicans not to support him. This is a strong conservative district, so it’s unlikely a Democrat could pull off a win. Meanwhile, the balloting si...

Greg Lopez takes special election, but result of delegate convention may not mean much for primary

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice HUGO -- Greg Lopez, who many years ago at age 27 became the mayor of Parker, was the last man standing here Thursday, as for the first time in 41 years Republicans' Congressional Vacancy Committee met to nominate a single candidate in a special Congressional election. Lopez will appear on the special election ballot in June with the candidate selected by the Democratic Party to decide who will serve the remainder of U.S. Rep. Ken Buck's unexpired term. "It was a bit of a surprise when our Congressman resigned," said 4th District Chairman Tom Weins. Buck gave a two-week notice and resigned effective March 22, citing his desire "not to be here anymore". He has said allegations that the timing of the resignation were aimed at boxing in or...

Who was Jack Swigert, the last congressman to be replaced by special election?

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice HUGO -- As he opened the first Congressional Vacancy Convention in 41 years here Thursday, March 28, to nominate a Republican to the 4th District special election ballot, Chairman Tom Weins noted the last time such a meeting was needed by the party. Jack Swigert had been elected to the newly created 6th District in Colorado. The Republican won election to the seat on Nov. 2, 1982, but on Dec. 27, 1982, Swigert died of respiratory failure seven days before taking office. "This is not business as usual," Weins said. "We last replaced a congressman through this process in 1983, following the death of my good friend Jack Swigert." But, just who was Jack Swigert, some of the younger delegates in the room Thursday may have asked? Here's a lo...

It was a no-good, very bad Opening Day for Rockies with 14-run third, most runs in inning on Opening Day since 1900

By Rocky Mountain Voice The tradition of Opening Day will be a historical one for the Colorado Rockies in 2024, just not a memorable one. The Arizona Diamondbacks scored 14 runs in a third-inning offensive onslaught Thursday night and by then the Rockies trailed 16-1. It marks the worst single inning in franchise history in terms of most hits, runs and batters allowed, the Associated Press reported. The 14 runs are the most in an inning on Opening Day for any team since 1900, more than a century, according to Elias Sports. The D-backs sent 18 batters to the plate and had 13 hits, two walks and one sacrifice fly, the Associated Press reports. The Rockies used three pitchers in the inning; Kyle Freeland, Anthony Molina and Jalen Beeks. While no one homered in the 14-run outbur...

Candidates quizzed on new issues in Douglas County GOP Women’s forum; Flora wins 64% of straw poll vote

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice LONE TREE -- A smaller collection of Republican candidates vying for the 4th District seat in the U.S. House offered potential delegates and voters an opportunity to get into more detail Wednesday here during the Douglas County Republican Women's forum. Five candidates vying for either a place in the special election or the party's primary were quizzed on their priorities, national defense, the House Speaker, inflation, positions on diversity, equity and inclusion in government, and more. "I will never give up, never stop fighting and never abandon you in this district," said Douglas County resident and candidate Deborah Flora, who again decisively won a straw poll in the county. She was joined on the panel by Lauren Boebert, Richard H...

Staff at taxpayer-funded Colorado virus lab were bitten by Covid-infected hamsters and disease-ridden bats, records show

By ALEXA LARDIERI | Daily Mail A taxpayer-funded Colorado lab that handles the world's deadliest viruses has suffered a shocking number of accidents in recent years, DailyMail.com can reveal. Bombshell documents show there were at least 50 incidents involving safety control lapses at Colorado State University between 2020 and 2023, including workers who were bitten by a Covid-infected hamster, splashed in the face with blood from mice with tuberculosis and scratched by rabies-infected cats. The reports were never disclosed to the public despite occurring at the height of the Covid pandemic, which many officials, including the FBI, suspect was borne out of a similar lab accident in China. Democrats work to erase the biggest school choice option in Colorado

By ROB MOULTON AND TIM HANNAN | The Federalist Public charter schools are an integral part of Colorado’s educational ecosystem. The Centennial State is now home to more than 260 charter schools that serve north of 130,000 students — more than 15 percent of the state’s total public school enrollment. Now some state lawmakers want to see these innovative, autonomous schools disappear. Introduced in early March following months of rumors and threats, Colorado House Bill 24-1363 takes aim at nearly every aspect of the state’s 30-year-old Charter Schools Act. The bill’s sponsors — Rep. Lorena Garcia, D-Adams/Jefferson, Rep. Tammy Story, D-Jefferson, and Sen. Lisa Cutter, D-Jefferson — introduced the bill despite widespread pushback and concern with early drafts from both sides of the p...
