Two courts, one case: Judge to weigh prosecutor removal and child hearsay in Hawkins proceedings

By Shaina Cole | Contributing Writer, Rocky Mountain Voice What began as criminal charges against retired Aurora Police Department sergeant Michael Hawkins has expanded into a dispute spanning two counties and two courts. While Hawkins faces felony allegations involving children, his former wife, Rachel Pickrel-Hawkins, was jailed after declining to follow a reunification therapy order issued during divorce proceedings. Two hearings that are set for February 19th inside a Douglas County District Court could subtly influence the course of People v. Hawkins. The hearings for case 24CR808 begins at 9:00 a.m and 1:30 p.m. in Courtroom C and are expected to be available through the Colorado Judicial Branch livestream.  The morning argument centers on a defense r...

Aurora Leaders Weigh Civilian Oversight as Police Accountability Debate Grows

By Kyla Pearce | The Denver Gazette More than 50 people attended a listening session Tuesday evening in Aurora to talk about the possibility of creating a civilian oversight group for the Aurora Police Department. The session was led by new councilmembers Gianina Horton and Amy Wiles, who took questions from the audience to start about the costs and meaning of police oversight. Talk of creating an independent oversight group for the APD is not new. For more than a year, protesters have attended every Aurora City Council meeting to demand action from the council following the police shooting death of Kilyn Lewis, who was unarmed and wanted on an attempted murder warrant. Officers say about 80% to 85% of those cars are returned to the owner after they provide proof of a valid license, registration and insurance. For drivers who don’t claim their vehicles within the 30- to 45-day window, their vehicles are added to Aurora’s public auction. They run about every six weeks. FOX31 saw people out looking for vehicles at Tuesday’s auction. READ THE FULL ...

Aurora’s 3-strike vehicle law: Nearly 1,000 off the streets as crackdown unfolds

By Vicente Arenas | Fox31 AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — Aurora Police Department statistics show 920 vehicles have been impounded under the city’s new three-strikes seizure law. Ward IV Council member Stephanie Hancock sponsored the city’s new traffic law. “I think the concern with our constituents has been, ‘Why are there so many cars with expired tags or no license plates at all on the roads?’ It’s very likely these cars don’t have insurance,” Hancock said. In Aurora, vehicles can be seized when a driver lacks a license, insurance and registration. Pictures of some of the vehicles that have been seized and sold can be seen on the Roller Auction website. When the new law went into effect, FOX31 saw several expired plates in just one location. APD said there are also a...
