Solution to Aurora’s TdA gang problem was presented in bill Democrats killed, Rep. Holtorf says

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A measure which could potentially have preempted the arrival of violent Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua in Aurora, Denver and other locations of the state was never given a chance by Democrats, state Rep. Richard Holtorf, R-Akron, says. He authored House Bill 24-1128, with the support of Sen. Mark Baisley, and an 8-3 party-line committee vote in the 74th Legislature prevented it from ever reaching the floor for debate. "They wholeheartedly rejected it on principle, a bad, progressive principle of open borders," Holtorf said. The bill sought to return Colorado to immigration policy prior to 2013, when Senate Bill 06-090 was in place. Doing so would have eliminated present law prohibiting a probation officer from providing personal inf...

‘This is troubling’: Aurora officials heavily redact landlord eviction records, citing ‘work product’

By Nicole C. Brambila | Denver Gazette Aurora officials heavily redacted public documents related to the eviction of 300 people at the Aspen Grove apartment complex last month, claiming the emails — to and from the city and the landlord’s lawyer — represented “attorney work product.” Under the Colorado Open Records Act or CORA, government agencies can assert certain privileges to withhold information. Examples include proprietary information, personnel issues, for a law enforcement investigation, or "work product," such as drafts. Will Trachman, general counsel for Mountain States Legal Foundation, doesn’t see how Aurora can claim a “work product” exemption on behalf of the landlord’s attorney. ‘That’s a takeover’ Cindy Romero says in describing how she lived under Tren de Aragua rule

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Cindy Romero was a legal tenant of an apartment complex in Aurora she says was taken over by the violent Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua, a takeover some say is just a figment of her imagination. "I don't know what your definition of takeover is, but there's no managers on the ground, no maintenance workers allowed on the property, the housekeepers were getting harassed," Romero said. And then members of the gang began changing the locks to the building, she says. "If the owners aren't there, managers aren't there and they changed the locks on the outside of the building, that's a takeover," Romero said. Romero shared her story of surviving the Tren de Aragua takeover of her apartment building Friday during a roundtable discussion...

Leadership failures to blame for Tren de Aragua flourishing in Aurora, Fabbricatore says

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A lack of leadership exists within City Hall administration and at the police department, and it can be credited for the growth in activity by Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua in the City of Aurora, former regional ICE Director John Fabbricatore said Friday during a City Hall roundtable. Fabbricatore, who holds the Republican nomination for the 6th District seat in the U.S. House, was joined at the roundtable by two members of the Aurora City Council, two members of U.S. Congress, former federal ICE Director Tom Homan, state representatives and senators, a county commissioner and four residents of Aurora. Missing were any member of management from City Hall or the police department. "Aurora has been underserved by their leadership in the...

‘We are actively investigating criminal activity’ Aurora PD says amid concerns over Venezuelan gang

By Michael Abeyta | CBS Colorado As panic over Venezuelan gangs in the community continues to spread, Aurora police visited an apartment complex Friday to reassure neighbors that officers are there for them. Meanwhile, the mayor is taking a much tougher approach. On Friday, the City of Aurora released a video of Interim Police Chief Heather Morris and a cadre of officers meeting with residents at an apartment complex that has been at the center of media and online discussions about Venezuelan gang activity. "We're out here because we care," Morris said. "We want to reassure the people who live in this community that we are actively investigating criminal activity and listening to them." Colorado has ‘active investigations’ into suspected migrant gang violence, ‘real people’ being hurt: DA

By Timothy H.J. Nerozzi  | Fox News Members of law enforcement are furious after Democratic Colorado Gov. Jared Polis called migrant gang violence at Aurora apartment complexes "misinformation." Arapahoe County, Colorado, District Attorney John Kellner spoke with Fox News's "America's Newsroom" Friday about the ongoing police response to the gangs of migrant criminals terrorizing apartments, which have been caught on camera. "I can tell you we're aggressively prosecuting any of the cases that we see come across our desk," Kellner told Fox News. "We've got a multi-agency task force looking into these crimes right now. And whenever we see a gang try to infiltrate our community or get a foothold, we're going to prosecute them vigorously." READ MORE At FOX NEWS

Tren de Aragua Gang expands to Denver and Aurora, unleashing chaos in sanctuary cities

By Christina Coulter | Fox News Although Denver's suburbs don't share its sanctuary city policies, the influx of migrants into the Mile High City has spilled outward. Now, its neighbors are facing an unprecedented wave of activity from a notorious Venezuelan prison gang.  Officials from Aurora, about nine miles east of Denver, told Fox News Digital the Tren de Aragua gang has gained a strong foothold in their city, commandeering apartment complexes and drumming up violent crime and sex trafficking.  "We currently have entire complexes under gang control — complexes where staff have been beaten up, they've been threatened, their families have been threatened [and] complexes where there are no staff left on the property," Aurora City Council Member Dani...

Todd Chamberlain selected by Aurora City Council as new police chief over some community concerns

By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado Members of the Aurora City Council voted Monday to confirm Todd Chamberlain as the new police chief. Several citizens voiced strong opposition, criticizing the lack of community involvement in the decision-making process. Aurora City Manager Jason Batchelor described Chamberlain as a "seasoned professional who has a deep understanding of fair, ethical, consistent and constitutional policing." Councilmembers in favor of Chamberlain asked the community to give him a chance. "We've had revolving door of interim police chiefs, and we need stability in this department. You guys want accountability. You want us to have better training. This is what he's about," said Councilmember Françoise Bergan. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO
