Gross Reservoir safety work can continue under appeals court ruling

By Michael Booth | Colorado Sun Denver Water may continue shoring up its partially-finished Gross Dam expansion in southwestern Boulder County until a May 6 U.S. District Court hearing detailing long-term safety issues of a permanent injunction against further construction, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals said late Friday.  The appeals court granted Denver Water’s request for a temporary stay of the halt to construction at least through the May hearing. “Denver Water makes numerous allegations of immediate and irreparable harm from the district court’s injunction of further dam construction,” the appeals court order said.  U.S. District Court Judge Christine Arguello had previously issued the injunction against further Denver Water construction on the dam raising, saying t...

Graham | Left Hand Valley Courier During the Boulder County Commissioners' public comment session on April 3, several Niwot residents addressed the commissioners with significant concerns about the detrimental effects of the current minimum wage ordinance on Niwot's small businesses. Ordinance 2023-4, which took effect on January 1, 2024, established the minimum wage for unincorporated Boulder County at $16.57 per hour this year, $1.76 higher than the neighboring incorporated towns and cities, except Boulder, which is still lower than the county ordinance. Colorado man facing multiple charges of sexual exploitation of a child, distributing child sexual abuse material

By Christa Swanson | CBS Colorado A man from Boulder County has been arrested and is facing multiple charges for allegedly distributing child sexual assault material. After the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force was notified of the material they determined the suspect likely lived in Boulder County. One of their investigators at the Boulder County Digital Forensics lab identified Matthew Howard Cory of Lafayette as a suspect in the case. Once they obtained a warrant, Detectives and Boulder County SWAT team members searched Cory's home in the 1100 block of Chiron Street. Did Boulder County ban firearms on hiking trails? 

By Por Jaijongkit | The Colorado Sun Firearms and projectile weapons including paintball guns and slingshots are prohibited in all parks and open space in unincorporated Boulder County.  Open and concealed carry of firearms are also prohibited in other “sensitive” public areas including hospitals, county government buildings, child care centers and polling places. The ordinance says the presence of firearms in those locations poses unreasonable risks of gun violence.  A person can generally be charged only if these locations post signs regarding the prohibition. A conviction is punishable by up to 364 days in jail. Boulder County also prohibits the sale of firearms to people younger than 21 and has a 10-day waiting period for gun sales. By Spencer McKee | Out There Colorado The Boulder County Sheriff's Office is working to solve a string of 'smash and grab' burglaries that are said to have taken place at a gas station in Superior involving the theft of tobacco and vaping products. Suspects in the case have been dubbed the 'Panda Bandits,' thanks to one person donning a panda costume while committing alleged crimes. According to authorities, suspects are alleged to have used rocks to smash a door or window for entry at the gas station located at 1603 Coalton Road, with two burglarizations occurring in the early morning hours of November 2 and a third occurring on November 10. By Dallas Heltzell | BizWest Staff Boulder County is using $400,000 in federal funds to launch a pilot program to repair and rehabilitate mobile homes at the Columbine Mobile Home Park and Orchard Grove Mobile Home Park in Boulder. “The intent of the pilot program is to support individual households and better understand the repair needs of local mobile home communities, which have been historically underserved,” according to a county news release.  Funding for the pilot project comes from Boulder County’s American Rescue Plan Act allocation. Boulder County food bank loses 1,500 pounds of food in power outage

By Kirin Pandit | 9News (via Denver Gazette) Even after a food bank that serves Boulder and Broomfield counties lost 1,500 pounds of food, including 45 gallons of milk, in the power outage – the agency is still working to help thousands of families who lost spoiled food from the April windstorm. Staff with Community Food Share said the quick work of staff to seal up their food helped salvage the majority of it. "We were actually able to salvage almost all of the food that was in our freezers and our refrigerators. Which we're so thankful for that because that was about $80,000 worth of food," said Kim Da Silva, the CEO of Community Food Share. "And then we went in and tested a whole bunch of our food to make sure all the temps were within range of safe food distribution." READ ...
