The event will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m at the terminal building, airfield SIDA ramp. “This facility is more than just an airport terminal. Boulder police are using AI to write crime reports, and some urge caution

By John Herrick | Boulder Reporting Lab Earlier this year, the Boulder Police Department began using artificial intelligence to transcribe body camera footage and generate police reports, a move officials say is saving time and improving report writing. This month, the department adopted a new AI policy. However, some community members are urging caution against the blanket deployment of these emerging technologies without proper safeguards.  The department’s use of AI technology was discussed this week during Police Chief Steve Redfearn’s first meeting with the Police Oversight Panel since his promotion earlier this month. The 11-member volunteer panel reviews investigations into complaints of officer misconduct and advises on department policies. READ THE FULL STORY AT...

University of Colorado-Boulder marks 3.4% enrollment increase, has 38,428 students

By Lucas High | BizWest The University of Colorado has 38,428 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled at its flagship campus in Boulder for the fall 2024 semester, up 3.4% from last year.  CU’s acceptance rate for the new school years was 76%, which Amy Hutton, associate vice chancellor for enrollment management, said was “a 30-year low.” Despite the overall enrollment increase, boosted retention caused CU to reduce its freshman-class size, she said, allowing the university to “to ensure (more) dedicated resources for retention and graduation.” READ THE FULL STORY AT BIZWEST

Boulder among three finalists to host Sundance film fest

By Lucas High | Bizwest Boulder is one step closer to winning the opportunity to host the Sundance Film Festival for a decade beginning in 2027. The city on Thursday was named one of three potential hosts to make the final round of the Sundance Institute’s selection process, according to the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. The other finalists are Cincinnati and Salt Lake City/Park City, Utah. Boulder “will continue to roll out the red carpet through this final competitive-bid stage as we demonstrate Colorado’s sustained commitment of support for the film festival, Boulder’s capacity to meet their logistical needs, and our alignment with their organization values,” Boulder Chamber CEO John Tayer told BizWest in an email. JonBenét Ramsey Colorado murder will be the focus of a new Paramount+ series

By Jesse Sarles | CBS Colorado Production is set to begin soon on a new Paramount+ limited TV series that will focus on the unsolved murder of Colorado girl. JonBenét Ramsey was murdered in 1996 and the case got heavy media attention for years. The cold case continues to be of high interest to people who are fascinated by all the mysterious details. Ramsey's parents first reported that their daughter was missing on the day after Christmas. She was later found strangled to death in their Boulder home. In the weeks and months afterward, the parents were considered by police as potential suspects along with Ramsey's 9-year-old brother. It wasn't until years later that authorities cleared their names. And twenty-seven years later, investigative work on the case continues. READ THE FUL...

Steve Redfearn, serving in interim since January, named as new Boulder police chief

By John Herrick | Boulder Reporting Lab Boulder’s city manager has appointed Steve Redfearn as the city’s next police chief, marking the latest change to the department as it faces demands for reform. Redfearn, who has served as interim chief since January 2024, joined the city’s police department in 2021. He has pledged to make policing more “equitable and effective.” “We’ll do this through a re-evaluation of our policies, best-practices training, a focus on employee well-being, and absolutely, a renewed commitment to engaging with community. That is what policing is about,” Redfearn said in a statement on Friday, Sept 6.  READ THE FULL STORY AT BOULDER REPORTING LAB

By  Karen Morfitt | CBS Colorado Three years after the shooting at the Boulder King Soopers, those who were inside the store shared how they remember that day in court. Over 700 people are homeless in Boulder — fewer than last year, but higher than in the past six

By Brooke Stephensen | Boulder Reporting Lab In January, volunteers counted 727 people experiencing homelessness in Boulder County. While this is a decrease from last year’s count of 839, it is still the second-highest figure recorded since the count began in 2017. The Point-in-Time report, published on Aug. 13, is a count of the number of homeless people on Jan. 22, 2024. Mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and conducted by the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative, the data provides some of the most reliable indicators of homelessness trends in Boulder County and across the Denver metro area, despite year-to-year variations due to weather, methodology and volunteer turnout. Of the 727 people counted, at least 193 — over a quarter — were uns...

Testimony begins in Boulder grocery store shooting trial

By Scott Weiser | CBS Colorado More than three difficult years later, the people who lived through the infamy of the mass murder at a Colorado King Soopers grocery store on March 22, 2021, dutifully recalled what happened in a Boulder courtroom Thursday. Seven people took the stand, the first to testify in the case against Ahmad Alissa for the killings of 10 people. Prosecutor Michael Dougherty began to try to show that Ahmad Alissa had clarity of mission that day; that actions were planned, deliberate and intentional, while defense attorney Sam Dunn is hoping the jury will find Ahmad Alissa not guilty by reason of insanity. "This guy was not just moving just shooting randomly, he was pointing and aiming," said Kevin Slay, one of the first witnesses for the prosecution."...

In Boulder, ballot measure seeking to close airport withdrawn amid FAA lawsuit to keep it open

By Tim Drugan | Boulder Reporting Lab Boulder’s 2024 local election just became much less contentious. Organizers with the ballot measure committee Airport Neighborhood Campaign announced Aug. 27 that they have withdrawn their controversial measure to decommission the Boulder Municipal Airport from the November ballot. A separate but related measure to redevelop the land into affordable housing, which had also qualified for the ballot, is also being withdrawn. It would have been the first time in the airport’s nearly 100-year history that voters decided whether to close the municipal airport. The measures were shaping up to be the most controversial local issues of this election season. READ THE FULL STORY AT THE BOULDER REPORTING LAB
