Aurora police see 80% increase in ‘puffing’ car thefts, an illegal activity in state law

By Rachel Saurer | KDVR-TV Fox 31 News While Colorado continues to see frigid temperatures across the state, police are warning drivers about the dangers of “puffing.” The Aurora Police Department has reported an 80% increase in thefts from puffing compared to the same time in 2024. From January to February 2025, the department has seen 30 cases. The month before that, they saw 15. “That number is probably going to go up in our next reporting period just because of the very cold days that we are experiencing right now,” said Agent Matthew Longshore, a spokesperson for Aurora police. Aurora police say teen faked attempted robbery, shot himself

By Christa Swanson | CBS Colorado Aurora police provided an update on a shooting in Montview Park, stating the teenager involved shot himself in the hand. Initially, the 15-year-old reported to police that he was inside the park around 11:30 p.m. Saturday when he was approached by two unknown men. He said the men reportedly tried to rob him at gunpoint and shot him in the hand when he tried to fight back. He was driven to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds. For murdering his mother, Greeley man gets life in prison without parole

By Brooke Williams | KDVR-TV Fox 31 News A man from Greeley was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for shooting and killing his mother over two years ago. Andrew Sweatt, 28, was convicted of first-degree murder by a Weld County jury on Wednesday after an eight-day trial. According to a press release from the 19th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Sweatt shot his mother 10 times on Dec. 8, 2022. By Gabby Easterwood | KDVR-TV Fox 31 News Denver police are investigating a string of shootings along Interstate 225 and Interstate 25 early Wednesday morning. Denver police said on Feb. 5, between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., they received approximately five reports of felony menacing with shots fired by a driver of a vehicle along I-225 in Aurora and I-25 in Denver. By Spencer Wilson | CBS Colorado A Colorado mountain missing persons case for a teenage girl has been cold for 42 years, but there is renewed effort to learn what happened since her disappearance happened decades ago.  Beth Miller was 14 years old when she went missing from Idaho Springs. Investigators believe she went for a jog and never returned home to her family in the small mountain town. Now, Idaho Spring Police Department is revisiting one of the cases that's haunted its community for decades.  Sgt. Ryan Frost took the case after the chief of police said it was going to be a priority for them to get some answers. Two found deceased in storm drainage tunnel in Fort Collins

By Jennifer McRae | CBS Colorado Fort Collins police told CBS News Colorado that two people were found deceased in a storm drainage tunnel early Monday morning. Officers were called to the location under College Avenue about 3:30 a.m. The person told police that there were two people unresponsive in a tent that was set up inside the tunnel. Law enforcement and emergency personnel believe they likely got into the tunnel by crawling under safety gates at the opening. Police said the two found deceased were previously contacted on several occasions by members of the Homeless Outreach and Proactive Engagement team "in an effort to direct them to various city resources." Just find a good lawyer and choose violence." Davis, the El Paso County chapter president for Moms for Liberty (M4L), doesn’t believe it was a coincidence. Top Aurora police crime analyst faces nine counts of official misconduct: ‘I shouldn’t have done it’

By Brian Maass | CBS Colorado The Aurora Police Department's top crime analyst, Frank Fredericks, 60, was charged this week with nine counts of official misconduct. In a phone call Wednesday evening, Fredericks admitted he used department computers for non-law enforcement purposes. "I ran a query on my husband to obtain a VIN on a vehicle that is in his name. Is it wrong, yes," said Fredericks. "I shouldn't have done it." Court records show the nine charges were filed Monday and stem from incidents between March 22, 2023, and April 29, 2024. Fredericks resigned from the Aurora Police Department June 17, 2024, after about 18 months on the job.
