Man who shot at four Pueblo police officers in 2021 sentenced to 96 years

By Ashley Eberhardt | Fox 21 News A man has been sentenced to almost a century behind bars for a 2021 incident in which he shot at four Pueblo Police officers as they were responding to a menacing call. 44-year-old James Justice was found guilty in July of several charges, including four counts of attempted first-degree murder after he fired shots at officers in January of 2021 on the northside of Pueblo near Elizabeth Street. According to the Pueblo Police Department (PPD), Justice initially shot at one officer and then ran from police to a nearby mobile home park where he shot at three more officers. Steve Redfearn, serving in interim since January, named as new Boulder police chief

By John Herrick | Boulder Reporting Lab Boulder’s city manager has appointed Steve Redfearn as the city’s next police chief, marking the latest change to the department as it faces demands for reform. Redfearn, who has served as interim chief since January 2024, joined the city’s police department in 2021. He has pledged to make policing more “equitable and effective.” “We’ll do this through a re-evaluation of our policies, best-practices training, a focus on employee well-being, and absolutely, a renewed commitment to engaging with community. By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado The City of Fort Collins will soon begin issuing citations for people caught speeding through intersections with traffic cameras. The city will be turning on the speed detection function on their intersection cameras, which before only monitored drivers for running red lights. The change comes after Colorado lawmakers changed state law to allow automated systems to issue citations to drivers for speeding.  Prior to the new law many cities, including Fort Collins, owned and operated speed enforcement cameras. Police: In Westminster, burglars are surveilling business owners before breaking into their homes

By Gabriela Vidal | CBS Colorado Westminster police are warning the public about a growing burglary trend in which small business owners are being targeted at their homes. "It started a little bit towards the end of last year. We noticed when I was interviewing some victims. They started saying, 'Hey I own a small business, I'm wondering if this has anything to do with it,' and then we started putting the pieces together, and then it just evolved even further," said Detective Adam Lanning with the Westminster Police Department. Lanning says burglars are targeting small business owners by following them home, placing surveillance cameras at their homes, and studying their victims before finding the perfect time to burglarize their homes. Now, it is almost a usual sight to see a few men in groups, squeegees and water bottles in hand approaching cars waiting for the stoplight. The Denver Police Department told FOX31 that this practice is illegal, and a couple of months ago, the department began posting flyers across the city to educate the individuals engaging in window washing. Fremont County lowers age requirement for detention deputies to address shortages

By CARIE CANTERBURY | Canon City Daily Record Individuals wishing to gain employment as a detentions deputy at the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office no longer have to wait until they are 21 to apply. On Tuesday, the Fremont County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution amending the Fremont County Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual with a lower age requirement for detention deputies from 21 to 18. “Hopefully that will resolve some staffing shortages that we have ongoing,” Fremont County Human Resources Director Alicia Stone said during Tuesday’s BOCC meeting. Investigation continues into partial Main Street building collapse in Cañon City

By CARIE CANTERBURY | Canon City Daily Record City officials continue investigating the cause of a partial building collapse Tuesday afternoon at 612 Main St. in Cañon City. Emergency and utility crews responded to the structure at about 5:20 p.m. and discovered that portions of a first- and second-floor east exterior wall had broken away from the building and collapsed. There were two ground-floor businesses and one occupied residential space upstairs. “Thankfully, there were no injuries; one family was displaced and is staying with family,” states a press release from the City of Cañon City on Wednesday.
