Avon Opens Public Debate After Vandals Target Police Camera Network

By Spencer Wilson | CBS Colorado A discussion over privacy, policing and public safety technology is taking center stage in Avon after three police cameras were vandalized earlier this month. That includes two speed enforcement cameras and one Flock license plate reader. The acts of vandalism happened during the early morning hours of July 18, when someone cut down or damaged camera poles and stole two of the devices. It resulted in more than $76,000 in damage and replacement costs, according to documents prepared for Tuesday night's Avon Town Council meeting. Police said they are actively investigating the felony vandalism and theft. The vandalism also ignited a much larger conversation online after the Avon Police Department's Facebook post about the damage...

By Óscar Contreras | Denver7 JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A former Jeffco Public Schools security guard arrested for child sex assault charges last month kept evidence of child sex abuse material for nearly 10 years before he was caught, according to an arrest affidavit in the case obtained by Denver7 over the weekend. Brian C. Richie, 67, was arrested June 22, 2026, by Longmont police on more than 30 charges, including felony sexual assault on a child from a position of trust, production and possession of child sexual abuse material, and invasion of privacy for sexual gratification. The investigation into Richie began in January of this year after a child disclosed “unsafe touching" by Richie to staff at Blue Sky Bridge child advocacy center following a school safety pre...

Does Aurora police provide equal protection to protesters and workers alike?

By Cory Gaines | Commentary, Colorado Accountability Project Does Aurora PD offer equal protection to all? Let me start with the top-line story before I get to an easily-missed detail. The first link below is to a CPR article which details how an employee of the ICE detention facility in Aurora allegedly shot a protestor.** A quote gives some detail: “Police reported that Booth [the alleged shooter and employee of the facility] and his colleagues had been unable to get into the facility for their work shifts due to the protest. The two women reportedly took pictures of the employees’ cars and got into a verbal altercation with the employees before walking away. Booth then took out his personal firearm and fired one shot in the direction of the women, hitting ...

Ex Police and Fire Chiefs Accuse Federal Heights Leadership of Retaliation Following Firings

By Gabriela Vidal | CBS Colorado It's been four months since first responders and Federal Heights residents crowded council chambers, angered after now former police chief Robert Grado and fire chief Marc Mahoney were fired abruptly. "It's been very emotionally draining, and there's not a minute of the day that this isn't on my mind," Grado told CBS Colorado. "We were great employees … I personally had gone a year without one resignation in my department." The termination came after years of what they say was a breakdown in communication between their departments and the city, as well as city manager Jacqueline Halburnt's leadership. "We were doing the best things for (our officers), and to try to get good change, to get progressive change (and) we were fir...

Court Documents Detail Suspect’s Account In Aurora ICE Protest Shooting

By: Alliyah Sims | KDVR FOX31 AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) – Newly released court documents revealed more details about the moments that led to the shooting of a protester outside the Aurora ICE Processing Center, including what the suspect told investigators after the gunfire. According to the arrest affidavit, Brandon Booth admitted he intentionally pulled the trigger during the July 16 shooting but told police he was trying to scare two protesters and never intended to hit anyone. Booth told investigators he became angry after he says protesters made comments about his children, and that they allegedly threatened to show up at their school, which he said sent his anger to a “15 out of 10.” He said he believed the comments were threatening, but he also acknowledged th...

AI Camera Expansion Sparks Debate Over Privacy Freedom and Government Authority

By Connor Boyack | Commentary, Washington Examiner On the morning of July 4, someone in Houston, Texas, cut two surveillance cameras in half and draped an American flag over the wreckage. In New Bern, North Carolina, police asked the public to help identify two men filmed destroying a camera — the public responded with hundreds of tips identifying the suspects as Batman and Robin. Since April 2025, Americans in at least five states have dismantled these devices from Flock Safety, a $8.4 billion company whose over 100,000 AI-enabled cameras now photograph passing vehicles in more than 6,000 communities. Yes, the vandals are committing crimes, and laws apply even when cameras annoy. But a nation’s lawbreaking, like its laws, contains information....

Who watches the watchers? Why surveillance technology needs stronger oversight, not less

By Brian Joondeph | Commentary, American Thinker Trust is important. Verification is essential. More than 2,000 years ago, the Roman poet Juvenal posed a timeless question: Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? — “Who will guard the guards themselves?” or “Who watches the watchers?” The Romans could never have imagined artificial intelligence, facial recognition, or nationwide networks of automated license-plate readers. Yet their question may be even more relevant today than it was three millennia ago. Recent debate over Flock Safety cameras illustrates why. The cameras have become an invaluable law enforcement tool. A stolen vehicle that crosses several jurisdictions can now be identified in minutes rather than days. An abducted child can sometimes be located be...

Four ICE Protesters Detained After Blocking Centennial Field Office

By: Adria Iraheta | Denver7 Deputies told Denver7 Arapahoe County reporter Adria Iraheta they cited 4 protesters Monday at the Centennial ICE field office during demonstrations. CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Four people were detained and cited Monday after a tense standoff with law enforcement outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Centennial, as protests continued for a fourth day following a shooting at a nearby ICE detention facility. The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office says the four were detained, cited and released at the scene after they were "warned multiple times to stop impeding operation of a public building." The protests began after reports of health concerns inside the Aurora Processing Center. Adams County health officials pre...

Federal Crackdown Targets Alleged TdA ATM Hacking Network That Hit Colorado Banks

By Logan Smith | CBS Colorado The U.S. Department of Justice says a violent Venezuelan gang which has a history of illegal activity in Colorado is responsible for stealing more than $6 million from American banks across the country.  Ninety-eight people with ties to Tren de Aragua have been named in indictments that accuse them of installing viruses into ATMs. The virus allows the machines to dispense sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars at a time.  ATMs in 26 states -- including Colorado, Wyoming, and, in particular, Nebraska -- were physically broken into over the course of two years (January 2024 to February 2026), according to court documents. Most of the incidents detailed in the indictments occurred in Nebraska. One Nebraska credit ...
