Trump administration revokes visas of 10 Colorado international students, universities say

By Chloe Atkins | NBC News Several international students at Colorado universities have had their visas revoked by the Department of Homeland Security, according to the universities. Between the University of Colorado and Colorado State University, 10 students have had their F-1 visa, which allows foreign students to study at universities in America, rescinded as of Tuesday evening. The University of Colorado said four international students were impacted. Meanwhile, six students at Colorado State University had their visas terminated, according to the school. “We are focused on supporting the success of all of our students, including international students. Each one of our students are seeking to advance their careers and the lives of their families, and we understand the anxi...

Pielke Jr: How To Get Rid of a Tenured Professor

By Roger Pielke Jr. | Reason I was a tenured full professor at the University of Colorado Boulder for almost 24 years. At the end of 2024, I left. Officially, it was a voluntary departure. But I sure felt like I'd been pushed out. My story started in 2015, when Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D–Ariz.) asked the university to investigate me. He alleged that I may have been secretly taking money from Exxon in exchange for the substance of my congressional testimonies, in which I reported on the consensus scientific findings of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change—that while heat waves and extreme precipitation had increased, there was vanishingly little evidence to support claims that hurricanes, floods, and drought have become more common or intense. I was not taking E...

CU Board of Regents investigates funding threats over cannabis research campaign

By Rocky Mountain Voice Staff The University of Colorado Board of Regents has initiated an independent review into Regent Wanda James' actions regarding state funding for the Colorado School of Public Health. The move comes after James reportedly suggested pulling funding from the school due to concerns over its public awareness campaign on high-potency cannabis. In a joint statement released on March 18 Regents Chair Callie Rennison and Vice Chair Ken Montera confirmed that the board has requested a third-party investigation to determine whether James violated regent laws or policies. The Colorado School of Public Health, a joint effort of CU Anschutz, CSU and UNC, was tasked by the Colorado Legislature in 2021 with researching the public health impacts of high-potency THC, parti...

Bill McCartney, winningest Buffs football coach of all time, dead at 84

By David Plati | CUBuffs.com Bill McCartney, one of the most visible and successful head coaches in all sports in the University of Colorado's 135-year athletic history, passed away peacefully here after a long illness shortly after 9 p.m. Friday evening with family members by his side.  He was 84. When "Mac" first set foot on the CU campus in Boulder in June 1982, little did he – or anyone – know at the time that just over a dozen years later he would retire as the winningest coach in CU football history. He orchestrated a turnaround with a program that had won just 14 games over the previous six seasons to one that claimed three Big Eight Conference titles and the 1990 consensus national championship. He is one of 11 with CU ties in the College Football Hall of Fame, as he was indu...

Police backtrack on claim that University of Colorado students overdosed on drugs laced with fentanyl

By Jesse Sarles | CBS Colorado Police in Boulder are now backtracking on their claim that over the weekend a group of University of Colorado students overdosed on cocaine that was possibly tainted with fentanyl. Instead, police now say the five men had consumed an extreme amount of alcohol and then some had taken drugs which led them to become violently sick. It happened on Saturday night at Kappa Sigma fraternity. Police say Narcan was used at the fraternity house before the students were transported to the hospital. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

University of Colorado-Boulder marks 3.4% enrollment increase, has 38,428 students

By Lucas High | BizWest The University of Colorado has 38,428 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled at its flagship campus in Boulder for the fall 2024 semester, up 3.4% from last year.  CU’s acceptance rate for the new school years was 76%, which Amy Hutton, associate vice chancellor for enrollment management, said was “a 30-year low.” Despite the overall enrollment increase, boosted retention caused CU to reduce its freshman-class size, she said, allowing the university to “to ensure (more) dedicated resources for retention and graduation.” READ THE FULL STORY AT BIZWEST

University of Colorado Board of Regents condemns protestors who targeted homes of two regents

By Shaun Boyd | CBS Colorado The University of Colorado's Board of Regents unanimously passed a resolution Thursday condemning a group that organized protests outside the homes of two regents in the Denver metro area. The group, Students for a Democratic Society, demonstrated outside the Superior home of Board Chair Callie Rennison on June 2 and then gathered outside the Arapahoe County home of Regent Ilana Spiegel, who is Jewish, on Sunday. SDS called for the university system to divest from companies with ties to Israel and called for violence against and the murder of Jewish people.  The resolution reads, in part, "The Board of Regents condemns Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) for its actions directed at Jewish people in the town of Superior and Arapahoe County, ...

‘Hostile and discriminatory’: 10th Circuit slams CU for treatment of religious vaccine exemptions

By Michael Karlik | Colorado Politics In a fiery opinion on Tuesday, the federal appeals court based in Denver tore into a pair of COVID-19 vaccination policies the University of Colorado imposed on medical staff in late 2021, concluding they discriminated against certain religions and affected plaintiffs were consequently entitled to exemptions. By 2-1, the all-Republican panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit directed unusually sharp barbs at each other and at the trial judge who initially declined to block the university's mandates. Judge Allison H. Eid, writing for the majority, believed the policies governing religious exemptions at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus were "permeated with animus." CU "has not even attempted to explain why its interest is served by...
