In an hour-long, self-described “rip the band-aid off” moment on Instagram, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reports that even if certain top Democrats get President Joe Biden to withdraw his election bid, they won’t be satisfied.
They want Vice President Kamala Harris out too, she said, indicating Democrats are saying one thing in public and another in private.
“I feel like there have been a lot of smokescreens and people have not been given the whole story,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I don’t have a crystal ball and don’t know what all is going on.”
She added: “That debate sucked. It sucked for everybody. It was just like not great.”
Ocasio-Cortez indicates influential Democrats are seeking more than just Biden’s removal.
“A lot of them are not just interested in removing the President,” she said. “They are interested in removing the whole ticket.”
Ocasio-Cortez admits, “I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
She continued: “Everyone is terrified of a [Donald] Trump presidency. I think everyone is willing to do anything to prevent that.”
By forming a conclusion that removing Biden is enough and Harris will be supported “you would be mistaken,” Ocasio-Cortez said. Polling also doesn’t show removing Biden and nominating Harris will be a winning formula for Democrats.
“People wanted to have this conversation six months ago, eight months ago,” she said.
Many of those influential in the party and forcing Biden’s potential exit now would not have the conversation then, Ocasio-Cortez says.
