Gabe Evans, the Republican nominee for the 8th District seat in the U.S. House, visited the southern border near El Paso on Thursday.
“The open-border policies of Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Yadira Caraveo have had dire results: more deaths, a record number of individuals on the terrorist watch list crossing into the U.S., and record levels of poisonous fentanyl released into the U.S.,” Evans said. “In 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection recorded an astonishing 2.5 million border crossings, plus an unknown additional number of got-aways.”
He reports 375 individuals on the terrorist watch list have been apprehended crossing into the U.S., and 99 have been released into the U.S., as of July.
Evans is vying to unseat Democrat Caraveo in the general election. Election Day is Nov. 5. He notes Caraveo has opposed efforts to secure the border, of impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and supported the Biden-Harris Administration “divesting” from immigration enforcement agencies like ICE and CBP.
“Realizing the unpopularity of her open-border policies, Caraveo is now paying lip-service to border security,” Evans said. “But her actions speak louder than words. As a candidate for Congress in 2022 and as a member of Congress, Caraveo does not appear to have visited the border once. Has she ever?”
Evans met with members of Border Patrol during his tour of the southern border, including getting a status on the border wall and a report on the current state of the border crisis.
“We know what works: build more wall, hire more border patrol officers, change the rules of engagement at the border, get agents protecting the border and preventing illegal entries instead of merely processing illegal border crossers, reinstate ‘remain in Mexico’, and shut down the cartels, coyotes, and human and drug traffickers,” Evans said. “These are the policies Yadira Caraveo opposes. In Congress, this is the agenda I will promote.”
