Before he was a congressional candidate, Manny Rutinel was calling animal agriculture “horrific”

By Jen Schumann | Rocky Mountain Voice Manny Rutinel spent the better part of six years calling animal agriculture a "horrific, exploitive industry." Rutinel entered the legislature through an appointment in 2023 when Rep. Dafna Michaelson Jenet resigned from the District 32 seat. Less than two years later, he was filing paperwork for Congress. He's the money leader in a Democratic primary that national strategists are watching closely. Federal Election Commission filings put him at $2.5 million raised—almost as much as Republican incumbent Rep. Gabe Evans. Cook Political Report has it as a toss-up. The seat flipped once already—it could flip again, and the House majority may well come down to it. Evans runs cattle on the side. Has for years. Back at the...

Yadira Caraveo’s former aides say they were mistreated, traumatized by Colorado congresswoman

By Jesse Paul | Colorado Sun U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo’s behavior last year while serving in Congress and running for reelection was so frightening and traumatizing to staff that aides proposed a safety plan requesting that sharp objects be removed from the Colorado Democrat’s offices. They also wanted assurances that subordinates not be responsible for talking her “through suicidal thoughts” or “keeping her company during a crisis.” The plan, a copy of which was obtained by The Colorado Sun, was dismissed and staffers say they were told they had a choice: either commit to contending with Caraveo’s mental health challenges or resign within a day.  This story is based on nearly a year of reporting and conversations with more than 20 people, including interviews with four former...

Yadira Caraveo launches bid to reclaim Colorado’s 8th District after razor-thin loss to Gabe Evans

By Rocky Mountain Voice Staff Democrat Yadira Caraveo has officially launched her campaign to reclaim Colorado’s 8th Congressional District—just five months after losing the seat to freshman Republican Gabe Evans by fewer than 2,500 votes. Caraveo’s announcement sets the stage for a rematch in what has quickly become one of the most closely watched and expensive congressional battlegrounds in the country. One of the Most Competitive Districts in the Nation The 8th District, created after the 2020 Census, has emerged as a political bellwether with no clear partisan tilt. It spans Denver’s northern suburbs and rural areas along U.S. 85 into Greeley and has the highest percentage of Latino voters of any district in the state. Caraveo first won the seat in 2022 by just 1,600 vot...

Final price tag of race in Colorado’s highly competitive 8th Congressional District: $40 million

By Jesse Paul | The Colorado Sun The final price tag of the race in Colorado’s highly competitive 8th Congressional District this year was about $40 million, with three-quarters of that sum being spent by super PACs.  Most of the money — or about $24 million — was spent to benefit incumbent U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo, a Democrat. But it wasn’t enough, as she lost to Republican state Rep. Gabe Evans by about 2,500 votes, or about 1 percentage point. Caraveo’s campaign raised about $8.1 million for her reelection bid, spending all but about $90,000 of that through Election Day, according to her campaign finance report filed Thursday with the Federal Election Commission. The report reflected fundraising and spending from Oct. 17 through Nov. 25.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE...

Republican Gabe Evans now holds a lead of 2,529 votes in 8th District U.S. House race

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice In a latest report from the Colorado secretary of state's office, Republican Gabe Evans has pulled ahead of Democrat Yadira Caraveo in the 8th District U.S. House race. Evans now holds 49.03% of votes, with Caraveo trailing at 48.21%, which presently places the race outside the threshold of an automatic recount. The 2,529-vote lead is a significant swing from where the race sat just a few days ago. The one-term U.S. Rep. Caraveo once led by a somewhat comfortable 1.59% margin. On Thursday, Evans narrowed the deficit to 2,096, which represented less than one-tenth of 1% of all votes to have been counted. A day earlier, Caraveo had a 3,817-vote lead, when an estimated 16.63% of the vote remained unreported. The 8th District is typically view...

Evans campaign predicts victory in 8th District: “We are confident that Gabe will win”

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Gabe Evans is closing in fast on Democrat Yadira Caraveo, and his campaign believes he will pull out victory in the 8th District U.S. House race. A race the one-term U.S. representative Caraveo once led by a somewhat comfortable 1.59% margin has been closed to a 0.44% difference between Evans and Caraveo. As of late Friday, Evans trails by 1,321 votes. "With late ballots trending toward Gabe and with tens of thousands of uncounted ballots remaining across the district, we are confident that Gabe will win," said Alan Philp, a spokesperson for the Evans campaign. The Associated Press indicates 9.87% of the vote remains unreported. Caraveo holds 48.85% of the 297,106 votes in the race. Evans holds 48.41% of the vote. On Thursday, Evans nar...

Caraveo’s lead has declined by 0.83%, as Evans now behind by 2,096 votes

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice It is officially nearly two full days after the closing of polls on Election Night, but who the winner will be in Colorado's 8th District U.S. House race remains undecided. Republican challenger Gabe Evans presently trails Democrat Yadira Caraveo by 2,096 votes, less than one-tenth of 1% of all votes to have been counted in the district. In the past 24 hours, Caraveo's lead has gone from what could have been comfortably outside the criteria for a mandatory recount to nearing it. She leads Evans now by just 0.76%. Her lead was at 1.59% at one point on Wednesday, back when she had a 3,817-vote lead. An estimated 16.63% of votes in the race have not been reported, meaning there still could be considerable change. The 8th District is typically...

All eyes remain on 8th District race where Caraveo, Evans are split by 3,817 votes

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Whether Democrats will retain a majority or the seats will be a split for the Colorado caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives appears as if it will come down to the one race most political observers always anticipated. Republican Gabe Evans, a former police officer and veteran, is trailing Democrat Yadira Caraveo, a pediatrician, by 3,817 votes in a virtual replay of the 8th District U.S. House race from 2022, when it took some time before Caraveo was declared the winner over Barb Kirkmeyer. Caraveo leads Evans by 1.59%. The state requirement to trigger a recount is a difference of 0.5% or less. As was the case in 2022, the competitive district sets up as Weld County versus Adams County. In Weld County, Evans earned 57.6% of the vote ...

Evans will be joined at 8 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, by Colorado House District 19 candidate Dan Woog at Pepper’s Fireside Grille, 8274 Colorado Blvd. in Longmont. Gabe Evans’ ad attacks the laws Yadira Caraveo supported to ‘Defund the Police’

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Inside the final two weeks before Election Day, Republican nominee Gabe Evans is launching an ad in the critical 8th District race for the U.S. House seat attacking his opponent's "Defund the Police" stance. “Far-left crime and drug policies spawned Colorado’s crime wave, and [Democrat] Yadira Caraveo voted for them all,” Evans said in a press statement. “From cashless bail, to sanctuary state policies, to decriminalizing fentanyl, Yadira Caraveo has been at the forefront of the ‘defund the police’ movement. When she co-sponsored and voted for Senate Bill 20-217, the defunding effect was so potent I personally witnessed drug interdiction units being downsized and plainclothes agents reassigned back to patrol, allowing cartels and international d...
