Hunt: Take pride in America this Fourth—and give thanks to God

By Jeff Hunt | Commentary, Substack

As fireworks light up the night sky this Fourth of July, let’s do more than celebrate—we must recommit. Recommit to the truth that this nation, the United States of America, was not an accident of history but a divine blessing. Our rights were not granted by kings or bureaucrats. They were endowed by our Creator. And no matter how much the secular left tries to erase that truth, it still echoes from our founding documents and lives on in the hearts of patriotic Americans.

It’s time to stop apologizing for loving this country. America is not just a place—it’s an idea. A God-given idea. That all men are created equal. That liberty is worth defending. That government’s power is limited because it answers to something higher. Our Founding Fathers didn’t bow to tyrants. They bent the knee to Almighty God and built this nation on biblical values: freedom, personal responsibility, the sanctity of life, and the rule of law.

Yes, America has flaws. Every nation does. But no other country in human history has done more to advance freedom, fight evil, or feed the world. No other country has defended religious liberty the way we have. No other nation has sent more missionaries, built more churches, or protected more innocent lives abroad than the United States. We are not perfect—but we are exceptional. And we should say it loudly.

This Independence Day, don’t let the radical voices drown out the truth. They want you to hang your head in shame for being American. They want our children to believe this country is irredeemably racist, sexist, oppressive, and evil. But they are wrong. America is not a land of oppression—it is a land of opportunity. And that opportunity came at a high cost, paid for with the blood of patriots and the prayers of saints.

It’s time to take pride in America again. And more importantly—it’s time to give thanks to the God who made her great. This holiday isn’t just about freedom—it’s about thanksgiving. Thanking God for His provision. Thanking God for raising up leaders like Washington and Lincoln. Thanking God for the brave soldiers who died so we could live in liberty. And thanking God for His mercy in holding this nation together through civil war, economic collapse, and global chaos.

This Fourth of July, gather your family. Read the Declaration of Independence. Pray together. Sing patriotic songs of freedom. Fly your flag and speak truth boldly. Stand up for America—and for the God who blessed her.
