Bipartisan Data Center Bill Stalls as Evans and Hickenlooper Clash Over Ratepayer Protections

Republican U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans tore into Senate Democrats on Wednesday after most of the party’s lawmakers blocked a measure designed to rein in electricity costs associated with building large new data centers.

Opponents have insisted the legislation “has no teeth.”

The Senate failed to advance the Ratepayer Protection Act on a 57-43 procedural vote, falling short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a Democratic filibuster. Four Democrats joined every Republican voting in favor of the legislation.

Colorado’s two Democratic U.S. senators, Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, voted against moving the legislation forward.
