What do all humans have in common? Death, time, and chance. Yet, we can also say life, eternity, and choice!
Regardless of perspective, life is undeniably an enigma — a paradox much like trying to catch a cloud or a wisp of smoke. Attempting to grasp it often transforms it into something entirely different. However, if we can glimpse this mystery, many certainties of life come into focus, allowing us to enjoy each day and expect goodness—not just sometimes, but always.
The Hebrew word for enigma, “Hevel,” appears 38 times in the Bible, particularly in the wisdom literature. Often translated as vanity or meaningless, it reflects life’s fleeting, elusive nature. Yet, understanding “Hevel” beyond a Western lens reveals profound truths about life’s mystery and temporariness. In our modern world, we’ve neglected the concept of enigma, but it invites us to explore deeper truths. When viewed through God’s eyes, life’s complexities can reveal His beauty and purpose, filling us with hope even amidst confusion.
Ecclesiastes 1:2 states, “Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, Vanity of vanities! All is Vanity.” Here, Solomon, the wisest man, confronts us with the reality that life often feels absurd or meaningless. Christians must grapple with this enigma — how do we live faithfully when faced with death, time, and chance? The answer lies in God’s redemptive plan, inviting us to see life, eternity, and choice through His perspective.
To navigate life’s mysteries, we must recognize that control is often an illusion. Accepting this can lead us to clarity through Scripture. Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job are foundational in the Bible’s wisdom tradition. Proverbs provide guidance, but when combined with Ecclesiastes, it gains depth. Adding Job completes the picture, enhancing our understanding — like upgrading from mono to surround sound. These books help us wrestle with tough questions and remind us of God’s presence even in uncertainty. Who wouldn’t prefer to hear God in surround sound rather than on a static-laden radio?
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens.” This isn’t fatalism; it’s a call to trust in God’s timing and wisdom, affirming His sovereignty. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Job 42:2 proclaims, “I know that You can do all things; no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.” Together, these verses guide us to surrender control and trust God’s eternal purposes—an assurance that we are secure in His hands.
It’s time to confront the enigma of life with faith, not fear. Let us be a generation that seeks depth rather than superficiality in our faith. Dive into God’s Word — read, reflect, and pray through Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job. Share this wisdom with those who need it, reminding them that life, despite its complexities, remains in God’s capable hands. While life may be an enigma, we find the wisdom to thrive in Christ abundantly. It’s our responsibility to inspire others to trust in God’s plan.
