$71M project to address ice buildup in Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels

The iconic Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels on the Interstate 70 corridor might soon be getting a facelift after the Colorado Department of Transportation noticed more ice buildup over the past several years. 

“With any structure, especially one as complex as this tunnel, there’s going to be some aging, there’s going to be some maintenance needed on the tunnel,” said Stacia Sellers, a spokesperson for CDOT.

The Eisenhower Tunnel was built in 1973 and the Johnson Tunnel was built in 1979, so both have seen their share of wear and tear. When they were built, the two held their title as the highest tunnel in the world, and now they are still considered the longest mountain tunnel in the United States.
