Luxury Apartments ‘Secure Garage’ Can’t Escape Denver’s Soft-on-Crime Fallout

DENVER (KDVR) — Several residents at a luxury Cherry Creek apartment building are voicing serious concerns about security after they say more than 20 vehicles have been broken into inside a gated garage in recent weeks.

The break-ins happened at Griffis Cherry Creek North, where tenants say the building’s fob-access garage has been repeatedly targeted — and that management has failed to address the issue or notify residents.

“This is the whole reason I moved here,” one tenant told FOX31, who asked to remain anonymous. “I used to live very much in the heart of downtown Denver; I didn’t feel very safe there. So I was like, ‘Let’s go somewhere safe’ — and it turns out, it’s not safe.”

Mauricio Dubon, who lives in the building, said he discovered his car windows shattered early Thursday morning.

“This morning I walked out to go to work around 7 a.m. and saw my windows were shattered,” he said. “Third time happening here — and just don’t know what’s going on.”

Dubon said he’s spent thousands of dollars repairing damage from multiple break-ins. Another resident told FOX31 she decided to file her own police report after an unsatisfying exchange with building staff.

“They were very upset that I was even asking what the next steps were,” she said. “I was told to leave the lobby and not try and dictate what they do with their building.”

Tenants say communication from the building’s management has been lacking, and they worry the crimes will continue without stronger safety measures.

“I am just hoping management steps up and at least lets us know what’s going on and is transparent about the whole situation,” one resident said. “So they don’t walk down to their cars and it’s a giant surprise that it was broken into.”

In a statement to FOX31, Griffis management said it is “aware and deeply concerned” about the break-ins and has requested additional patrols from the Denver Police Department.
