Colorado Election Officials Advance Campaign Finance Review Against Phil Weiser

(The Center Square) – The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office says there’s enough evidence to warrant an investigation into Attorney General Phil Weiser’s compliance with campaign finance laws.

State law doesn’t allow campaign donations to exceed $1,450. The office of Secretary of State Jena Griswold, a Democrat, issued its determination after reports of the Weiser campaign failing to make refunds for 46 donations that exceeded $1,450. Under state law, any amount beyond $1,450 must be refunded within 10 days, which, according to the complaints against Weiser, was not done.

Weiser, a Democrat, is running against Republican candidate Victor Marx to succeed Democratic Gov. Jared Polis, who’s termed out.

Following two campaign finance complaints to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office earlier this month against Weiser, the state’s election division on Tuesday issued a notice of initial review. It offered an opportunity for Weiser’s gubernatorial campaign to fix problems and come into full compliance by Oct. 6.

Two complaints were filed with the Secretary of State’s Office on Sept. 8 and Sept. 10, respectively, by Danielle Neuschwanger, a Colorado Springs area real estate broker, against Weiser. Neuschwanger ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary for governor in 2022 and went into the general election as the American Constitution Party candidate. That was year Polis was reelected governor.
