Fine is believed to be largest in history

With just a month before the November general election, the campaign of Republican gubernatorial candidate Victor Marx was fined tens of thousands of dollars for hundreds of campaign finance violations.

The fine — $57,647.16 for 210 violations — is believed to be the largest in Colorado history.

“The scale of the violations (is) without precedent … (and) intentional,” said Administrative Hearing Officer Macon Cowles in his 27-page decision.

“The volume and duration of the violations, their continuation after notice, the knowing deposit of facially excessive checks, the disregard of TRACER’s warnings, the months-long retention of prohibited funds, the failure to document a single reattribution as the rule requires and the mass of mistaken and amended reports are each aggravating factors,” Cowles added. “Together they far outweigh Respondents’ disclosure and late-occurring work.”
