MONTROSE COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – The Montrose County Board of County Commissioners has approved the first reading of proposed measure that would prohibit the intentional introduction, release, transportation, translocation and habitat establishment of non-native wildlife within unincorporated areas of the county.

County officials drafted the ordinance to shield private property, agricultural and ranching operations, water rights, mineral development and public access from potential impacts linked to non-native wildlife introductions. The measure specifically applies to species captured or moved from outside Colorado, including gray wolves relocated to the state from Oregon and British Columbia.

Montrose County Commissioner Sean Pond spoke in support of the measure, emphasizing the balance between environmental consideration and local interests.
