DENVER–Colorado Democrat Ken Salazar has come out in opposition to Amendment 87, the measure seeking to overhaul how the state collects income taxes, arguing it would hurt workers.

Amendment 87 proposes a constitutional amendment that would eliminate the state’s flat income tax rate requirement, replacing it with progressive system with new tax rates in six income brackets, topping out at 8.4%.

The change amounts to an estimated $2.7 billion tax increase per year, according to the ballot language.

Salazar, a former U.S. senator who has also served as U.S. ambassador to Mexico in the Biden administration and Interior secretary in the Obama administration, was featured in a brief video released last week by Keep Colorado Affordable, which opposes Amendment 87.
