The State of the Union Address may not have had the result for President Joe Biden that he would have hoped.
Emerson polling finds that his job approval rating has continued to slide since the address, and his job disapproval rating has continued to rise. Biden addressed the nation March 8. Polling was conducted April 2-3 of 1,438 registered voters with a margin of error of 2.5%.
In January, voters surveyed by Emerson graded the President’s approval at 42%, up from a low of 38% in November. That approval of 42% ticked down 1% in March and another 1% in April, Emerson finds.
Disapproval of the President’s job performance was at its lowest in January, coming in at 46% in Emerson polling. It has ticked up every month since, with 47% disapproving of his job performance in February, up 1% in March and coming in at 51% in April.
Approval and disapproval ratings for the President are trending opposite, resulting in an 11% spread, as his approval falls and disapproval rises.
A bizarre moment in the State of the Union Address for those in both parties was an exchange between Biden and Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who challenged Biden to “Say Her Name”. Instead of recalling Laken Riley, a college student from Georgia who was slain by an illegal immigrant, Biden recalled Lincoln Riley, a college football coach at the University of Southern California. He also called the accused murderer an “illegal”, for which he drew criticism from Nancy Pelosi and others in the Democratic Party.
In the same poll, those surveyed were asked if they had a favorable or unfavorable view of the main contenders for the presidency. Biden was 6% under water with a 54% unfavorable result, while Trump was 4% under water with a 52% unfavorable view.
The survey also found for more than one-third of the country, the most important issue is the economy, a 13% spread above immigration.
