An assassin’s bullet missed its mark Saturday, but nonetheless hit former President Donald J. Trump at his campaign rally in Butler, Penn.
Just moments into his speech gunfire could be heard and Mr. Trump went down behind the podium from which he was speaking.
“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social, his social media platform. “I knew immediately that something was wrong, in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.”
He made note of the U.S. Secret Service team “for their rapid response on the shooting.”
Unconfirmed media reports indicate an AR-style rifle was used in the shooting, with as many as eight rounds fired.
“I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured,” Mr. Trump wrote. “It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country.”
