Prop. 130 will create $1 million death benefit for emergency responders

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice When there's an emergency -- a home break-in, fire or heart attack -- Coloradans depend upon emergency responders from the far stretches of the Eastern Plains to the Western Slope and places in between to be there. Advance Colorado is asking voters this November to be there for emergency responders. Election Day is Nov. 5. "Let's take care of our first responders who take care of us, and make sure their families get a $1 million death benefit," said Advance Colorado Executive Vice President Kristi Burton Brown on Monday in a Twitter/X post. https://twitter.com/KBBColorado/status/1838217369883177267 Advance Colorado is the organization that placed Prop. 130 on the ballot, a measure that would direct $350 million from the state to assis...

Crank earns endorsement of Donald Trump in southern Colorado’s 5th District race

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Jeff Crank, the Republican nominee in Colorado's 5th District in the U.S. House, has received the coveted endorsement of former President Donald J. Trump. "Jeff is a Conservative Warrior who has incredible support from his community," Trump began the endorsement on Truth Social. Opposing Crank in the general election is Democrat River Gassen. The winner of the race will follow Rep. Doug Lamborn, who is retiring from office. The Trump endorsement in the 5th District was earned in the Republican primary by GOP Chairman Dave Williams. Crank defeated Williams to earn the Republican nomination. Crank has taken to Twitter/X in support of Trump. Presidential debate, Taylor Swift, Meta credited for surge in Colorado voter registrations

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A three-day period in September has led to a surge in voter registration, the office of Secretary of State Jena Griswold reports, and performer Taylor Swift may get to take some credit. More than 21,000 either registered to vote in the state or updated their registration during the period, which began Sept. 10 with Swift's endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in advance of a televised debate that night between Harris and former President Donald Trump. It represents a 0.5% increase in voter registrations. “Registering to vote is the first step to making your voice heard in our democracy,” Griswold said. “It is exciting to see Coloradans registering to vote and getting involved in advance of this November’s election. Every voter has a vo...

‘We have reached the end of our rope’: Business owners call on city leaders to solve vagrancy in rural town

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice FORT MORGAN -- Vagrants are trespassing in residential and business property, doing drugs in public, urinating and defecating in the library and other public places, and in general becoming an out-of-control public nuisance. It would be just another day in Denver, but this isn't Denver. It is Fort Morgan on the Eastern Plains of Colorado, where neighbors have known each other for decades in the town of about 12,000 and residents rarely unite to air their grievances in the happy-go-lucky community. Until now. Residents are telling city leadership they have had enough. "We have reached the end of our rope," said Malori Rudnik, owner of Double R Embroidery at Main Street and Beaver Avenue adjacent to Glenn Miller Park. "We have found needles ...

Package addressed to secretary of state, containing white powder substance, under investigation

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A package containing white powder addressed to the Colorado Secretary of State's office has been intercepted at a state mail facility. The package included a return address of “U.S. Traitor Elimination Army.” Similar packages have been received by several secretaries of state, first reported Tuesday, Sept. 17, the Colorado Secretary of State's office noted in a press release. Investigations by the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Colorado State Patrol preliminarily indicate the powder included in the package is harmless. Often, investigations of such packages are found to be gypsum, a harmless white mineral common to chalk, drywall and plaster. “We cannot tolerate threats to election officials and public servants," said Colorado Sec...

Optics were more important to Biden-Harris Administration than protecting Afghanistan 13, Rep. Lopez says

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice As America paused on 9/11 last week to remember those lost in terrorist attacks on New York City, U.S. Rep. Greg Lopez went to the floor of the U.S. House to address the country's exit from the resulting war in Afghanistan. "President [Joe] Biden and Vice President [Kamala] Harris fled a country we freed for two decades, left in the grasp of merciless terrorists," said Lopez, who represents Colorado's 4th District in the U.S. House. "Why did we have to lose 13 brave service members? We didn't." He levied blame for the "catastrophic exit" from Afghanistan on the leadership of Biden-Harris. "We lost them because there was no real plan on how to get out of Afghanistan," Lopez said. "Any real, true commander-in-chief would know that you must p...

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Residents of the 3rd Congressional District are invited to participate in one of five mobile office events being offered Sept. 18-19 and 24 with staff from U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert's office. “Our Congressional mobile office hours provide an opportunity for constituents in remote parts of the 3rd District to get the assistance they need from our staffers who can help them in a variety of ways," Boebert said. "Meeting Coloradans where they are is a critical part of the work our office does and I know our mobile office hours will continue to be a huge help to rural constituents.” Staff is available during the events to assist residents with federal agencies, including the Veterans Administration, expedited help with passports, taxpayers being ha...

‘I’m glad President Trump was OK’: Colorado Republicans react to second assassination attempt

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice The second attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump in as many months on Sunday drew the ire and well-wishes by many on the political right in Colorado. "I’m glad President Trump was OK, and I’m thankful for the law enforcement that have detained the shooter," Gabe Evans, the Republican nominee for the 8th Congressional District, wrote on Twitter/X. Mr. Trump was five holes into a golf round at Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach, Fla., when the muzzle of a long gun was noticed through the shrubbery, about 400 yards away, according to media reports. Though initially described as an AK-47 rifle, court documents Fox News reviewed detail the long gun was an SKS-style long gun. On Fox News, Sen. Lindsey Graham received a call from Mr...

Control of U.S. House likely to come down to 24 races, one of which is in Colorado

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Control of the U.S. House of Representatives will most likely come down to an estimated 24 toss up seats in November, according to the Cook Political Report ratings. Only one of those seats is in Colorado: the battleground 8th District pitting incumbent Democrat Yadira Caraveo against Republican Gabe Evans. Last week, Evans collected the support of the Libertarian who was in the race, which could mean a 2-3% swing in the outcome. The race was rated "even" prior to the announcement by the Cook Political Report. If Evans can win the seat, it would provide Republicans with a "plus-one" in the U.S. House. It would also likely give Republicans a split of Colorado's congressional delegation. In order to control the U.S. House, a party must hold at ...
