No comment: In Weld County, commissioners have removed public’s opportunity to speak at meetings

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice GREELEY – A collection of residents in Weld County argued, during a town hall meeting here Wednesday, they should have an opportunity to express opinions and engage with officials they elected. Recently, though, Commissioner Kevin Ross and a majority of other commissioners removed public input from the Board of County Commissioner meeting agendas. It meant residents could still address the board on agenda items, but not on topics not included on the agenda. “There is no where in state or county law where it says we have to have it,” Ross said. That is true, said Jeff Roberts, executive director of the Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition. Open meetings law does not cover the subject of whether or not a board or commission must all...

Residents want Weld County to declare it is non-sanctuary for illegal immigrants

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice GREELEY – There was a time, Weld County Sheriff Steve Reams recalls, when local law enforcement in Colorado had the capacity to better work with federal immigration officers. It all ended when Gov. Jared Polis signed Democrat-supported House Bill 1124 into law in 2019. “What this law said was I cannot work with ICE,” Reams told those gathered Wednesday for a town hall meeting here at the Weld County administration offices. A summary of HB 19-1124 indicates it prohibits “a law enforcement officer from arresting or detaining an individual solely on the basis of a civil immigration detainer.” At issue for many in Weld County is whether or not the county is a sanctuary to illegal immigrants, regardless of whether the state has become on...

Family Dollar had net sales loss of -1.2% in 4th quarter, leading to 970 stores set for closure

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice Dollar Tree, Inc., [DLTR] dropped 15% in early trading Wednesday following news it would close nearly 1,000 stores, mostly within the lowest-performing Family Dollar franchise. The company’s fourth quarter earnings report, released Wednesday, indicates that while Dollar Tree had net sales of plus-6.3% the Family Dollar brand had losses of minus-1.2%.  “We finished the year strong, with fourth quarter results reflecting positive traffic trends, market share gains and adjusted margin improvement across both segments,” said Chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling in a statement. “While we are still in the early stages of our transformation[al] journey, I am proud of what our team accomplished in 2023 and see a long runway of growth ahead of us.”...

The broadcast at WhiteHouse.gov will allow viewers to post emojis to give a reaction as the State of the Union happens, but don’t expect a chance to offer a negative reaction. Secretary Griswold ‘unfit’ and ‘lacks integrity’ House Republican letter reads

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice A month has passed since Republicans in the Colorado House of Representatives first called upon Speaker Julie McCluskie to hear Articles of Impeachment for Secretary of State Jena Griswold. “Since being elected, the secretary of state has used her position as a platform for her partisan political ideology and has proven herself unfit for this elected position,” a new letter from Rep. Ryan Armagost and signed by 16 other Republicans reads. The letter, dated March 6, 2024, terms it imperative to have the matter placed on the legislative calendar. “The secretary of state has consistently been criticized for her lack of transparency and questionable bias,” Armagost’s letter continues. “Her partisan political beliefs are constantly the subj...

‘They call it Super Tuesday for a reason,’ Trump says as he celebrates victory

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice Super Tuesday was just that, President Donald Trump said March 5 following Republican Party primary elections in 16 different states – 15 of which he won. “They call it Super Tuesday for a reason,” he said. “There’s never been anything so conclusive. This was an amazing night, an amazing day; it has been an incredible period of time.” A handful of opponents were whittled down to one by Super Tuesday, and by Wednesday morning his only remaining opponent, Nikki Haley, suspended her campaign.  In a post on Truth social, Trump called for Haley’s supporters to unify under him and “join the greatest movement in the history of our nation.” In Colorado, he won the Republican primary by 30 percentage points, taking victories in 57 of 64 coun...

Trump now faces ‘time of choosing’, Haley says as she suspends campaign

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice Nikki Haley has suspended her campaign for President, but perhaps not her advocacy for traditional Republican conservative values. Channeling Ronald Reagan, she termed this “a time of choosing” for former President Donald Trump, now presumed to be the Republican nominee for President for the third consecutive time. “It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him,” Haley said from Charleston, S.C. “I hope he does that. At its best, politics is about bringing people into your cause, not turning them away. Our conservative cause badly needs more people.” The goal of the campaign was to help Americans have their voices heard, Haley said, and “I have done that; I have no regrets.” ...
