E-bike access to non-motorized trails could be debate decided by voters in Colorado Springs

By Brennen Kauffman | The Gazette Two former city leaders asked the Colorado Springs City Council to place a public vote about e-bike access on city parkland on the April ballot. Colorado Springs has been debating for months about whether to begin allowing battery and electric-powered bikes onto trails that are reserved for non-motorized vehicles through the city Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) program. During the public comment period of Tuesday's City Council meeting, prominent former council members Richard Skorman and Wayne Williams said that any change to the voter-enacted TOPS program is required to be made by a ballot measure. Meet the ‘cutest sheep in the world’ at the National Western Stock Show

By Morgan Whitley | KDVR-TV Fox 31 News  The National Western Stock Show is one of the best ways to kick off the new year with rodeos, shopping and livestock. But there is one animal that’s turning heads this year. Meet the rare, and adorable, Valais Blacknose sheep. A flock of this unique breed from Nashville.Farm is currently educating guests at the stock show, but there is more to them than just their cute faces. According to Jacque Watkins Skinner with Nashville.Farm, the Valais Blacknose sheep originate from the Valais region of Switzerland and were exclusively raised there until the sheep were imported to the British Isles in 2013 and 2014. Today, the Swiss herdbooks include almost 13,700 animals. READ THE FULL STORY AT KDVR-TV FOX 31 NEWS

Safety remains high concern for those who work in downtown Denver, despite crime drop

By Jasmine Arenas | KCNC-TV CBS Colorado In downtown Denver, crime rates may be down, but for those who work and live in the area, the reality on the streets often feels different. Recent statistics show a significant reduction in violent incidents, including shootings and homicides in Denver.  However, as locals share their stories, it's clear that safety is still a growing concern for many who call downtown Denver home. Many longtime employees say the nature of crime has shifted in more concerning ways. READ THE FULL STORY AT KCNC-TV CBS COLORADO

Weld County Republican legislators seek to repeal Colorado’s ‘cage-free’ eggs law

By Marissa Ventrelli | Colorado Politics A pair of Republican lawmakers are seeking to repeal Colorado's "cage-free" eggs law, which went into full effect at the start of the year, citing the commodity's price has increased more than any other food tracked.   Under 2020's House Bill 1343, all eggs sold in Colorado are required to come from cage-free chickens starting on Jan. 1, 2025.  This year's House Bill 1074, sponsored by Rep. Ryan Gonzalez, R-Greeley, and Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer, R-Brighton, would repeal that law. The bill, which was introduced on Jan. 8, has been assigned to the Agriculture, Water & Natural Resources Committee. READ THE FULL STORY AT COLORADO POLITICS

Senate bill aims to stop the expansion of grocery stores selling hard liquor in Colorado

By David Migoya | The Gazette The number of grocery stores selling hard booze under a quirky license initially designed for pharmacies would stop at about two dozen under a bill that advocates say is meant to save independent liquor stores. Senate Bill 25-33 would put an end to any new licenses for pharmacies to sell spirits such as whiskey — known as Liquor License Drug Stores (LLDS) — and leave at about 25 the number of stores such as King Soopers and Costco that already do. The bill is sponsored by senators Judy Amabile, D-Boulder, and Dylan Roberts, D-Steamboat Springs, who unsuccessfully backed a similar, though more comprehensive, bill last year. Aurora officials to close troubled ‘The Edge’ apartments where TdA problems began

By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado The City of Aurora is moving forward with plans to close The Edge at Lowry apartment complex at 12th and Dallas. Last week, a municipal judge granted an emergency order to close the complex. The property has been deemed a criminal nuisance due to persistent violent incidents. The emergency order says the complex is an "immediate threat to public safety." Aurora City Attorney Pete Schulte says a full closure of the property is expected by mid-February. Schulte says the closure timeline has been in the works since early December, giving nonprofit organizations and local agencies time to prepare support for affected tenants.  READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

Gaines: You paid about $24.5 million in tax dollars to Denver to address the city’s homelessness

By Cory Gaines | Commentary, Colorado Accountability Project A CORA request came back recently (part of digging into a reader question) that illustrates the importance of paying attention to what your legislature is doing — in particular, paying attention to those seemingly-unimportant, unsexy bills. The reader had asked how much money Denver has spent on homelessness. I'm not even going to pretend that I can find or relate a full accounting to you. Not only are there different streams of money, how you do the counting matters. I've seen headlines that put the number at $155 million spent by Denver. Okay. Personal experience, making repeated requests to Denver officials for information on the topic have gone unanswered. Let's go with that number, though I wonder whether the lack o...

In Senate confirmation hearing, Pete Hegseth comes out swinging against anonymous smears

By Kristina Wong | Breitbart Defense Secretary Nominee Pete Hegseth came out swinging hard during his confirmation hearing on Tuesday against the orchestrated smear campaign against him pushed by the mainstream media. “A small handful of anonymous sources were allowed to drive a smear campaign and agenda about me, because our left wing media in America today, sadly, doesn’t care about the truth. All they were out to do [was] to destroy me. And why do they want to destroy me? Because I’m a change agent and a threat to them, because Donald Trump was willing to choose me, to empower me, to bring the Defense Department back to what it really should be, which is war fighting,” Hegseth said. “So I’m willing to endure these attacks, but what I will do is stand up for the truth and for my...
