Rep. Jake LaTurner of Kansas joins Republican run for the exit in Congress

By Brian Porter | The Rocky Mountain Voice Eastern Kansas Rep. Jake LaTurner announced Thursday he won't seek re-election to his seat in the U.S. House after less than two terms. He's just one in a line of many Republicans to have made the same announcement, some putting the Republican majority in jeopardy. In Colorado, Rep. Ken Buck, R-Windsor, announced his departure in October and then abruptly decided not to finish out his term. Then Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colo. Springs, announced his resignation. When Rep. Lauren Boebert announced her plan to leave the 3rd District seat, it meant all three Republicans in Colorado would be leaving their seats in Congress. They were far from the only ones to do so, as Republicans have nearly handed away their House majority. Unlike Buck, LaTur...

Gray wolf from Great Lakes population caught in coyote trap in Elbert County

By Rachel Gabel   | The Fence Post A rancher in Elbert County, Colorado, contacted Colorado Parks and Wildlife after discovering a wolf-like animal in a legal coyote trap on April 3 on a ranch in eastern Colorado.  U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service confirmed that this animal is a gray wolf from the Great Lakes wolf population. This is not a wolf from the 10 recently released by Colorado Parks and Wildlife in December 2023. As a federally listed species under the Endangered Species Act, the service is investigating this incident and is working in coordination with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. As an open and active investigation, no additional details are available at this time. The animal was an 84-pound male captured by a trapper using a legal leg-hold trap on a 30-day agricultura...

Colorado Libertarians call for end to Middle East violence, condemn all sides of conflict

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice War and violence are never the answer to resolving international disputes, a statement from the Colorado Libertarian Party reads. The party has issued a statement condemning escalating conflict in the Middle East and calling for a peaceful resolution between Israel, Hamas and Iran. "We stand firmly against any and all acts of aggression, regardless of the parties involved," the statement reads. "The recent events in the Middle East have only served to further destabilize an already volatile region, resulting in the loss of innocent lives and the displacement of countless families." While the statement refers to the conflict as "Israel's war on Gaza", conflict between Israel and Palestinians has been ongoing since 1948, marked by the de...

12 students and teacher killed at Columbine to be remembered at 25th anniversary vigil

By COLLEEN SLEVIN | Colorado Springs Gazette (via Associated Press) The 12 students and one teacher killed in the Columbine High School shooting will be remembered Friday in a vigil on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the tragedy. The gathering, set up by gun safety and other organizations, is the main public event marking the anniversary, which is more subdued than in previous milestone years. Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who began campaigning for gun safety after she was nearly killed in a mass shooting, will be among those speaking at the vigil. So will Nathan Hochhalter, whose sister Anne Marie was paralyzed after she was shot at Columbine. Several months after the shooting, their mother, Carla Hochhalter, took her own life. Syphilis cases in Colorado are exploding. The state just issued a public health order to try to stop that.

By John Ingold | The Colorado Sun Syphilis is among the most brutal diseases known to humans, but it is also among the sneakiest. Dr. Michelle Barron, an infectious disease expert with UCHealth, calls it “the great masquerader.” Early symptoms in adults are often painless, temporary and easy to miss. After that, the disease can lie silent in the body for years until it makes itself known. And Colorado, like other states across the country, is now dealing with the devastating impacts that can occur when syphilis goes undetected and untreated. Since 2018, syphilis cases in the state have more than tripled, to 3,266 last year from 1,084 in 2018. Those 2018 numbers were already a significant jump from previous years. Miltimore: Sen. Rand Paul exposes the ‘Great Covid Cover-up’

By Jon Miltimore | The Foundation for Economic Education In an explosive new op-ed, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) claimed that at least 15 separate federal agencies knew that attempts to create a COVID-19-like coronavirus were being undertaken at the Wuhan Institute of Virology as early as January 2018. Yet, heads of these agencies did not reveal this information to the public; for years, they actively refused to release information on the project to lawmakers such as Paul, who were attempting to provide congressional oversight. “For years, I have been fighting to obtain records from dozens of federal agencies relating to the origins of COVID-19 and the DEFUSE project,” wrote Paul, who in March revealed he was formally launching a bipartisan investigation into the...

Orr, Rolling: Xcel power blackout showcases the high cost of unreliable electricity

By Isaac Orr and Mitch Rolling | Complete Colorado Hundreds of thousands of Xcel Energy customers in Colorado recenlty lost power as high winds damaged power lines, and Xcel preemptively shut off the power to 55,000 customers to mitigate the risk of wildfires. Among the customers who lost power were homeowners and small businesses who received little to no warning. The Denver Post detailed how families experienced entire refrigerators and freezers full of food spoiling, forcing them to refill them at a time when food costs are 25 percent higher than they were four years ago. Business owners without power lost tens of thousands of dollars due to the outages, which stemmed from lost revenue from being unable to do business and lost products. Restaurant...

New polling finds Biden’s approval rate slumping, disapproval rate growing

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice The State of the Union Address may not have had the result for President Joe Biden that he would have hoped. Emerson polling finds that his job approval rating has continued to slide since the address, and his job disapproval rating has continued to rise. Biden addressed the nation March 8. Polling was conducted April 2-3 of 1,438 registered voters with a margin of error of 2.5%. In January, voters surveyed by Emerson graded the President's approval at 42%, up from a low of 38% in November. That approval of 42% ticked down 1% in March and another 1% in April, Emerson finds. Disapproval of the President's job performance was at its lowest in January, coming in at 46% in Emerson polling. It has ticked up every month since, with 47% disap...
