DNC left out Jimmy Carter in deleted post celebrating Democratic presidents

By Asher Notheis | Colorado Springs Gazette The Democratic National Committee has deleted a social media post made to honor recent Democratic presidents. The post left out former President Jimmy Carter. The post had been made to commemorate Presidents Day, and showed President Joe Biden and former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton in the photo. Carter, 99, was not included in the photo. The absence of Carter caught the attention of conservative radio host and former presidential candidate Larry Elder, writing "OOPS!" regarding the post's omission. Colorado Springs cracks down on homeless camping in hopes of pushing people toward shelter, services

By Jennifer Brown and Hugh Carey | Colorado Sun Jeremy Krause has a simple code for making it on the streets of Colorado Springs: “Stay dry and avoid the cops.”  To keep warm, he burns hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol. To steer clear of the police, he and his dog move often.  But avoiding them is not working as well anymore.  “It wasn’t so bad in the beginning, but the last two years they’ve been really irrational,” said Krause, who has been homeless for about eight years. “They’ve stolen my things like six times. They take your tent, your blankets, your heat, everything you need to survive. That’s to force us into the shelter.” READ THE FULL STORY AT THE COLORADO SUN

Republican Nathan Butler will seek to unseat Rep. Lukens in Colorado House’s 26th District

By Elliott Wenzler  | Steamboat Pilot A Republican candidate has filed to oppose Democratic state Rep. Meghan Lukens as she runs for re-election to represent the competitive 26th district of the Colorado House, which covers the northwest corner of the state and narrowly favors Democrats.  Nathan Butler, who is an Army veteran, was elected to the Craig City Council in November.  House District 26 encompasses Rio Blanco, Moffat and Routt counties and most of Eagle County. Its population is about 28% registered Republicans and 23% registered Democrats. The largest voting block, like in many parts of the state, is the 48% of the population that is unaffiliated with either party.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE STEAMBOAT PILOT

NASA searching for ‘Martians’ on Earth as yearlong simulation approaches

By Luke Gentile | Colorado Springs Gazette NASA is calling all "Martians" on Earth to apply to be part of a yearlong simulation set to help educate the agency on humanity's exploration of the Red Planet. The simulation will be the second of three planned Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog ground-based missions, according to a release from NASA. "Each CHAPEA mission involves a four-person volunteer crew living and working inside a 1,700-square-foot, 3D-printed habitat based at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston," according to the release. "The habitat, called the Mars Dune Alpha, simulates the challenges of a mission on Mars, including resource limitations, equipment failures, communication delays, and other environmental stre...

Lincoln pardoned Joe Biden’s great-great-grandfather, newly uncovered document reveals

By David J. Gerleman | The Washington Post Every new president selects personalized Oval Office decor to suit his tastes and pay homage to admired predecessors. President Biden’s Oval Office boasts both a portrait and a bust of Abraham Lincoln. But his family’s connection to the 16th president extends far beyond workplace ornamentation. It dates to a late-night brawl during the Civil War. On the evening of March 21, 1864, the quiet of a small corner of the Army of the Potomac’s sprawling winter camp along the Rappahannock River near Beverly Ford, Va., was disturbed when a fight broke out in one of the mess tents between Union Army civilian employees Moses J. Robinette and John J. Alexander. READ THE FUL STORY AT THE WASHINGTON POST

Editorial: Nearly a dozen Republicans want to go to Congress in 4th District

By Rocky Mountain Voice Editorial Board The issue: Colorado’s 4th Congressional District will offer a field of 11 Republican candidates and 17 candidates total for a seat in Congress. We say: A field this large will be difficult to navigate. Get to know the candidates, their values and positions. Ultimately, delegates and then voters will be tasked with selecting one person to send to Washington, D.C. A five-minute opportunity for Congressional candidates to state their case to prospective voters drew a capacity crowd Sunday evening in Windsor at the President's Day Celebration, hosted by the Colorado Conservative Patriot Alliance, in American Legion Post No. 109. Five minutes. That’s 300 seconds. Not exactly an eternity. Then again, anyone unfamiliar with Colorado’s 4th Con...
State funding could be withheld from Colorado cities that don’t tie housing to transit under new affordability push

State funding could be withheld from Colorado cities that don’t tie housing to transit under new affordability push

By Brian Eason | Colorado Sun Colorado Democrats on Tuesday introduced a bill that would send millions of dollars to cities that agree to encourage denser housing near transit — and withhold state highway funding from those that don’t. The measure, House Bill 1313, is a key piece of Democratic Gov. Jared Polis’ plans to address the state’s housing shortage and combat climate change. It relies heavily on financial incentives, such as affordable housing tax credits and infrastructure funding, to coax cities into developing transit-oriented communities — a departure from last year’s failed attempt to force cities to zone for apartments and townhouses. But it has a punitive side, too: Affected cities that don’t take steps to meet housing goals laid out in the bill could see cuts ...

Trump campaign says South Carolina is ‘the end’ of Nikki Haley

By Julia Johnson | Colorado Springs Gazette Former President Donald Trump's campaign released a memo Tuesday declaring Saturday's Republican primary in South Carolina as "the end" of former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley's presidential campaign. Trump senior advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles authored the new memo, titled "The End Is Near For Nikki Haley," in which they state that South Carolina's nominating contest will mark the close of Haley's 2024 bid, whether she agrees or not. "Of course, like any wailing loser hell-bent on an alternative reality and refusing to come to grips with her imminent political mortality, we should expect more references to Kings and Coronations," they said, referencing Haley's recent justification for continuing her ...

Video: RMGO’s Ian Escalante discusses the Colorado Legislature’s 2024 anti-gun bills

By BRANDON WARK | Free State Colorado Colorado’s anti-gun legislators are attempting some of the most egregious restrictions on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms that Colorado has ever seen. From outright gun bans, to expensive concealed carry requirements, these politicians have no regard for law-abiding gun owners or the Second Amendment. Fortunately, Colorado has a Pro-Gun Advocacy Organization called Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (also known as RMGO). RMGO is effectively fighting back through lawsuits, lobbying, and electoral work. Ian Escalante is the Director of Operations for RMGO. His passion for Liberty is matched by his knowledge of legislation. In this video, Ian provides a detailed look at all of the anti-gun bills that have been filed so far, and explains what kind...

Boebert in 4th District, Evans in 8th win President’s Day Celebration straw poll in Windsor

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice WINDSOR – The winding path of the campaign trail in Colorado’s 4th and 8th Congressional District races turned Sunday evening to the President’s Day Celebration hosted by the Conservative Patriot Alliance here at American Legion Post No. 109. “There have been a series of debates and forums,” said David Huntwork, chairman of the Conservative Patriot Alliance and emcee of Sunday’s event. “Rarely are candidates allowed a significant amount of time to share about themselves. We wanted to provide that.” Republicans vying for the Republican Party’s nomination in both districts participated in a meet and greet and a successive five-minute speech to the audience before a straw poll was conducted. “This is a very non-scientific poll,” Huntwork ...
